MPO Canopus Study Group - interest?
I am interested in starting a Salt Lake City area MPO Canopus study group. For those unaware of it, MPO Canopus is astrometry and photometry reduction software. http://www.minorplanetobserver.com/ A predicate question is whether there are enough MPO owners in Utah to warrant such a group. I would like to do an initial survey of interest. If you are interested in such a user group, that would meet every two or three weeks initially at the City Library, please post here or send me an email. The general idea would be for users to give short presentations on those parts of the program that they have mastered. My own interest is that I have been working through the manual trying to learn it and am a bit overwhelmed. Perhaps if there was a small local study group, all of us could move forward with reductions. - Kurt __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Kurt, Are you aware of AAVSO, the American Association of Variable Star Observers (http://www.aavso.org)? While astrometry is not a particular interest of mine, a good friend has been an officer with the association for years, so I'm aware of what they do. They're set up to provide support and guidelines for doing astrometry and photometry. The observations reported by contributors are real honest-to-goodness science. If you don't know about them, take a peek at the website. Michael On Sep 10, 2006, at 5:46 PM, Canopus56 wrote:

Thanks, Mike. I know about them and their discussion groups. It's still nice to have some local hands on contact. You can only do so much over the internet. - Kurt __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Kurt, you might try Charlie Green. If you don't know him, he is a long-time SLAS member and I know that he has some interest in astrometry/photometry. I can also think of Jerry Foote. He has a private/professional observatory dedicated to this kind of work. While he's not in SLC (he lives just outside of Kanab) he may be some help to you. Wish I had the knowledge and time to pursue similar efforts. Kurt Jerry Foote is very familiar with MPO and uses it to script all night runs with his 24" to monitor cataclysmic variables. -----Original Message----- From: utah-astronomy-bounces+djcolton=piol.com@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces+djcolton=piol.com@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Kim Sent: Monday, September 11, 2006 1:29 PM To: 'Utah Astronomy' Subject: RE: [Utah-astronomy] MPO Canopus Study Group - interest?
