Re: [Utah-astronomy] In Defense of GoTo mounts
My scope isn't GOTO. I have digital setting circles. I like to move the scope myself. I still feel like I am the pilot of my scope. A GoTo scope would be more like auto-pilot. I try to keep things simple as possible but the computer is fun to use. That's why my 8" SCT has been collecting dust for the past five years. On my GM-8 mount I can get by without digital setting circles so I won't have to shell out $300 for the encoders. Debbie
Debbie, I absolutely agree with your preference for digital circles over GoTo, for the same reason. At least you're going through the motions, heck, the hobby is sedentary enough. (Pushing glass makes up for that, eh, Brent?) And let me add here, since it's been missing from the thread (unless I missed a post) that of course GoTo has limitless possibilities for the physically handicapped. If your encoder bracket is made of either plastic or metal, I can probably repair or duplicate it. If you like, give it to Rich next time you see him, and he'll get it to me next time I connect with him. Freebie. Chuck --- UTAHDEB@aol.com wrote:

Hear, hear! On a portable scope that (IMHO) is the way to go. And the nice thing about digital setting circles is that when the computer decides to take a night off, you still have a perfectly functioning instrument. With so many of the GOTOs I've seen if the power goes out or the batteries die or the computer just stops cooperating you're sunk as the scope can not be positioned manually. Patrick
