So the weather report for next weekend looks good so far. Who's got a suggestion for best viewing location for low western horizon?
Anywhere on the benches of north Davis county with a clear view over the GSL in a SSW direction will have about as low a horizon as you can get without driving too far, if you live in SL or Davis counties. On 12/3/11, Chrismo <djchrismo@gmail.com> wrote:

Thanks Chuck. Do you have a particular spot? I'm not too familiar with (anything aside from SLC and National Parks) the area, so I'm open to suggestions. I hit Lakeside all the time in the summer. I work late, so I'm willing to stop by the house, grab the 'scope and the wife and head wherever to arrive in time for the event. Before folks get too excited about Saturday's eclipse keep in mind that from here in Utah the Moon will set before totality and the glow of approaching dawn will spoil the view even before that. 'Course there is one person on this list who could have an excellent view. Rob, you going to chime in? The eclipse to get excited about is next May's annular. patrick
Then again, it is an excuse for people to get together and enjoy something astronomical and still be local . . . On Sat, Dec 3, 2011 at 9:57 PM, Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com>wrote:

Oh you bet your sweet okole I will have a view, that is if the weather doesn't go 'winter' on us. We plan on being at the summit next to Faulkes North and another camera located next to the Zodiacal Light tower. We also have Matthew Marulla of Slooh.com out doing a live broadcast, so it out to be an interesting night. I'll nap until midnight, make some fresh Vanilla Macademia Kona coffee (aka Rocket Fuel) break out some musube's and maybe some sake too. The last few days we had a system cruise thru, lots of high overcast, no rain, just no sky. The system will pass by noon tomorrow and it's up we go for an all nighter at 10,000 ft., no complaints here, it's just a 50 minute drive from my house and some of you all know, we have a pretty nice location and an excellent skies. The invitation is open always to come join us. Aloha from Maui Rob
That's a word I haven't heard since my days in the Pacific -- notably in a song about Ol King Cole. -- Nice to hear from you again! Hey Joe It has been good thought it seems that this year will be a wet one or at least not too great of a sky. When it's good here it's great, last Sunday at the beach was SPECTACULAR!!, just one of those days that makes Maui so popular. When it's grey, I tend to be less active, stay inside and do 'work'. Other than that, life is good, planning trip #3 to the South Pacific or central/western Australia. The last trip I took was great, it made me start to plan a longer adventure and I hope I can pull it off in a year or so and if my wife Dianne comes along, that'll be good too Aloha Rob

Rob, You can bet your sweet "Okole" on that but we in Utah are going to freeze our "Okole's" off! Oh come on now. Relish the eclipse as it is presented. There is a wonderful spectacle to behold, whether one sees totality or not.
A well-composed image of a partially eclipsed moon setting behind the mountains would be easily as beautiful as the finest deep-sky shot. Maybe even more so.
Oh, I'm totally excited about the eclipse in May, and the Venus transit to follow. In my case, however, I'm a junkie for this kind of action, so I'm willing to bend my own rules and get out to see it. This will also be one of those rare opportunities to get my wife interested in viewing. After last summer's Great Garradd Debacle (aka, the "It looks like a smudge" incident) and Labor Day's Grand M57 Disappointment (aka, the "I think that you need to clean this eyepiece, it looks like there's a fingerprint or something on it" affair), the eclipse, even if only mildly spectacular, will be a welcome sight. It's hard to ignore an eclipse, unless clouds get in the way. ________________________________ From: Chrismo <djchrismo@gmail.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Sunday, December 4, 2011 11:12 AM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Eclipse next Saturday morning Oh, I'm totally excited about the eclipse in May, and the Venus transit to follow.
