Re: [Utah-astronomy] Solar activity
I haven't had the time to go out at noon, but Spaceweather and SOHO are showing many good prominences over the last few days. IME (in my experience) prominences are best visible within an hour either side of solar transit - which means taking a peek at lunch hour during the work week. - Kurt SOHO Pic http://spaceweather.com/images2009/16jun09/latest_eit_304.gif?PHPSESSID=is0s... Kurt, Thanks for the update. I am headed out on my patio with the SLAS PST and hopefully will have good views to report. Kurt, You were right. I set up the PST and sure enough, there were two good prominences to be seen, one of which was almost a full arch. It was nice to take the opportunity while the sun was shining. Kind of difficult if the sun isn't shining, don't you think? ;o) Any object is at it's best when crossing the meridian, but don't let that stop you if you miss the lunch window. If your only opportunity is late afternoon, go for it. That's when I went out yesterday and the view was terrific for so late in the day. It's neat seeing particular prominences and other features, then identifying them on SOHO shots taken close to the same time as your observation. On Tue, Jun 16, 2009 at 2:56 PM, Rodger C. I'm trying not to complain about the clouds as I managed to get 4 hours of data last night/this morning. First time I've been able to work since the 28th of last month. Alas, it's cloudy again... patrick p.s. Reminder that SLAS is meeting tonight. Bob Moore is going to talk about the recent SLAS trip to various Hawaiian Observatories (dinner to follow).
