I have to agree with Joe that public safety is our priority. However, I wonder if we couldn’t post a sign saying “West Nile Virus detected-please use repellent,” at the entrance to SPOC? Also, is it possible to have the grounds keeper use a spray a couple hours ahead before the public begins arriving? Just a thought. sent from my iPhone
I don't really have a dog in this race, but it seems to me that the first thing the SLAS board should do is contact the Health Department, and ask what they advise. On Wed, Aug 22, 2018 at 9:11 AM Thomas Sevcik <sfv1ts@hotmail.com> wrote:

All, Chuck Hard's advice has already been done. Read below: Mr. Fry, thanks for the email and your concern about exposure to the West Nile Virus. It sounds like you're doing all the right things, encouraging people to wear long sleeves and pants, and using mosquito repellent. With people being informed and taking precautions, I don't think that cancelling events will be necessary. Thanks again, ________________________________________ From: Rodger C. To simply advise visitors to wear long clothing and use insect spray is highly irresponsible. To begin with, you don’t really expect someone to hear your advice, turn around, go home and change clothes, do you? How to you square your responsibility to protect public health to a baby who gets West Nile virus? Do you put public safety at the top of your concerns, or are you so full of your observatory and its wonderful Kolob scope that you’re blinded to the needs of others? If someone gets the disease, are you prepared to accept moral and legal responsibility for creating this hazard? Would you step up and say, Sorry, I was wrong. You need to look past your ego and vested interest. You’re the director of the Flint Water Distruct. Really protect the public. Joe, Tell that to the Tooele County Health Department not me. What do you think puts you in a position of greater authority than them on this subject. I wish I had a like or love button for Eric's response :) Before you start in on me again Joe, I'm not making light of the heath risk. Rodger did the right thing, he asked for advise from the health department and got it. Measles is also a health risk, as are other diseases that can be potentially life threatening. No one is rolling up the streets in fear. Precautions yes, and MAYBE in the future, if the risk grows, then stronger measures. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Erik Hansen" <zaurak@digis.net> To: "Utah Astronomy" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Wednesday, August 22, 2018 12:02:40 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] West Nile Virus Are the evacuating all Stansbury Park residents? Personally I am loving the irony of someone using Yahoo mail expressing concern over the dangers of spreading a virus. I think we have covered this subject adequately at this point. I think we can all agree: 1. SLAS is definitely behind the outbreak of West Nile 2. Now is the time to panic 3. The mosquitoes should tried and hung (or possibly executed by firing squad) 4. Everyone should wear long sleeves and full netting at all times 5. The mosquitoes have infiltrated the Health Department 6. Microbiology is the most fascinating part of astronomy On Wed, Aug 22, 2018 at 12:52 PM Joan Carman <jcarman6@q.com> wrote:

A check of the Utah Department of Health website, Bureau of Epidemiology, shows that Salt Lake county has by far the largest number of WNV-positive pools, as well as number of confirmed human cases of the disease. You are probably at a greater risk of being infected by a mosquito carrying the disease in Salt Lake County, than in Tooele county.
Is anyone inviting the public to a Salt Lake County site known to be infected? Also note that, according to today’s Deseret News, Utah has recorded its first West Nile virus death, Sent from Yahoo Mail for iPhone On Thursday, August 23, 2018, 6:32 AM, Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote: A check of the Utah Department of Health website, Bureau of Epidemiology, shows that Salt Lake county has by far the largest number of WNV-positive pools, as well as number of confirmed human cases of the disease. Personally, I'm not worried. I work at a shop surrounded by WNV-positive pools. The chances of serious illness is only one in eighty cases. I've got a bigger chance of dying on I-215 on the way home today. Even if someone did develop the disease, it would probably be impossible to prove where they caught it. I'll read about it in the papers if it comes to that. I'm sorry Joe, I can see where you're coming from, but I'm too busy just surviving to worry about what the local astronomy clubs are doing. I have a mild allergy to certain insect bites, I always dowse myself with DEET whenever I go out to SPOC anyway. Or anywhere, for that matter. Tom, send you message directly to the board members. It's good advice. This is not the place to discuss SLAS issues (please don't take this as a scold :)) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Thomas Sevcik" <sfv1ts@hotmail.com> To: "Utah Astronomy" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Wednesday, August 22, 2018 9:06:16 AM Subject: [Utah-astronomy] West Nile Virus I have to agree with Joe that public safety is our priority. However, I wonder if we couldn’t post a sign saying “West Nile Virus detected-please use repellent,” at the entrance to SPOC? Also, is it possible to have the grounds keeper use a spray a couple hours ahead before the public begins arriving? Just a thought. sent from my iPhone _______________________________________________ Utah-Astronomy mailing list http://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/utah-astronomy Send messages to the list to Utah-Astronomy@mailman.xmission.com The Utah-Astronomy mailing list is not affiliated with any astronomy club. We have only former board members on this list, as near as I can tell, no current office holders. On Wed, Aug 22, 2018 at 10:32 AM Joan Carman <jcarman6@q.com> wrote:

Joan and Chuck, yesterday at 4:33 p.m. I did send the information and advice to the current board. As you can see, quite a lot of arrogance is displayed by certain vested interests. If the place remains open because of sheer arrogance and ego, and some member of the public contracts West Nile virus as a result, will these people own up? Joan is just wrong that this isn’t the place to discuss a danger to the public. An astronomical observatory that exposes people to Wesr Nile virus is a danger, regardless of vested interests in not discussing it. Tom, what do you say to the child whose parents shrugs off the warning and then comes down with the disease? “Gee, tough luck, kid, you should picked better parents”? SLAS is highly irresponsible to even consider exposing members of the public to the danger. Tom, how much of the lake and the surrounding countryside do you think the groundskeeper should spray?
