RE: [Utah-astronomy] "Bowling" for meteorites
Thanks for the support. I never thought this idea would become controversial, but for now at least I think it's still manageable. I'll let y'all know if I get any serious hate mail. -----Original Message----- From: Chuck Hards [mailto:chuckhards@yahoo.com] Sent: Thursday, January 09, 2003 11:45 AM To: utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] "Bowling" for meteorites VERY well written, Kim. One of several interesting aspects is that about every year an amateur rocket meet, lasting several days, is held on the salt flats -- no doubt with BLM permission. Dozens or hundreds of rockets are launched. Some are far heavier than a bowling ball. It's not unusual for them to reach extreme heights, and the parachutes sometimes fail, allowing them to plummet to earth at terminal velocity. I haven't heard that the BLM worries about the impact of this metal. Just a thought. -- Joe Joe Bauman science & military reporter Deseret News bau@desnews.com (801) 237-2169
