Sorry, it was Ian who had to leave at 8:30. And IMHO, most of the point he was trying to make about M uslim society was not specifically spelled out by him. He presented the example and left the listerner to figure out the implications and apply them. During th e golden age of Islam, Muslims named most of the stars in the sky, nam es we still use today. During the golden age of Islam , Muslims created a numeric system we use in America today. During the golden age of Islam, Muslims created Algebra, a mathematical system we still use today. Then the Muslim faith was codified and scientific and mathematical progress came to a scree ching halt. Muslins today are going to engineering, medical and business school. W hat they are doing with that knowledge? Are they taking their education back to the Muslim world and moving it forward? There are many places throughout the 1.4 billion Muslims where there never have been, to this day, electricity or running water. The majority of the 1.4 billion Muslims are living on a poverty level . There is a wealthy ruling class, a knowledgeable class, but they aren't sharing the knowledge for everyone's benefit. T hey aren't engineering aquiducts or water systems to reach the impoverished . They aren't stringing electrical wire, or advancing solar energy to move their society forward . Nine hundred years later, the Muslim world is still standing still. And the rest of world quakes in fear of jihadists . At least that's the implication I took away from that one example.
It seems to me that the take-away from that is to be wary of the rise of modern Christian fundamentalism in America today. People in religious leadership positions are in complete denial of science, and large segments of society are blindly following them, including members of government at all levels. We are in danger of repeating the dark ages, the oppression of the Inquisition. On Fri, Mar 28, 2014 at 12:57 AM, CenturyLink Customer <jcarman6@q.com>wrote:

We sell a _ton_ of these here at Clark Planetarium. Ours are ten bucks more than the ad you're referring to, and you'll pay sales tax, but we have them in stock right now. That 8" Dob is a lot of astro-bang for the buck. Barrett; That is a decent price. Here is another option; I am selling an 8" f5.6 dobsonian that I made. The optics and motions will most certainly be superior to the Orion. Being a commercial scope, the XT8 looks better than my sonotube and plywood dob, but telescopes are for looking through, not at. I am asking $400.00 for mine which includes 2 plossl eyepieces (25mm and 10mm), a Rigel Quickfinder, an integrated fan for mirror cooling, and a solar filter. Please contact me off-list and we can arrange a time for you to check the scope out. Preferable under clear skies at night so you can see how it performs. I love mine! Use 2-inch eyepieces in it and you'll see a world of difference. Or galaxy, whatever. On Friday, March 28, 2014, BWFlowers <BWFlowers@comcast.net> wrote:
