Okay, Philae has landed, they(ESA)'re all patting themselves on the back (as well they should - a terrific accomplishment), but no picture yet. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Wiggins Patrick" <paw@getbeehive.net> To: "Utah Astronomy" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Tuesday, November 11, 2014 10:09:01 PM Subject: [Utah-astronomy] European Spacecraft Set to Harpoon a Comet Tomorrow European Spacecraft Set to Harpoon a Comet Tomorrow http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.php?feature=4373 patrick _______________________________________________ Utah-Astronomy mailing list http://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/utah-astronomy Send messages to the list to Utah-Astronomy@mailman.xmission.com The Utah-Astronomy mailing list is not affiliated with any astronomy club. Yes! Congratulations to ESA. The harpoons didn't fire, apparently, so they are saying that they don't have absolute confirmation that they are on the surface. Waiting for images. Also the upward-pointing engine that is supposed to keep the lander on the surface isn't working. Only the microgravity of the comet is holding the lander in place. That's too bad. The last I heard was that they did fire and Philae had retracted the harpoon lines. Now there's no sound from the live feed. Bad sign. ________________________________ From: Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Wednesday, November 12, 2014 9:55 AM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] European Spacecraft Set to Harpoon a Comet Tomorrow The harpoons didn't fire, apparently, so they are saying that they don't have absolute confirmation that they are on the surface.
