Patrick Wiggins and Phun with Physics
I got into work this morning and picked up a copy of the U's The Daily Utah Chronicle only to see that our Patrick Wiggins is on the front page. If you would like to read about his demonstrations to kids at the Natural History Museum of Utah, here is the link: http://www.dailyutahchronicle.com/ -A
I attended a Phun with Physics presentation a month or two ago and I can tell you that Patrick and his assistant Jayceen did an outstanding job. The kids obviously had a ball and the parents got a chance to sit down for a few minutes. As written in the article it is geared toward school age children but it is amazing what some of the kids know Steve

Hi Steve, Thanks, but one correction. Jayceen and my other partner Tori are just that "partners" not assistants. All three of us trace the program's roots back to our early days at the late, great Hansen Planetarium where we developed many of the demos we still present today. I am, BTW, not very happy that neither Jayceen or Tori were mentioned in the piece. All three of us were there last night when the reporter and photog visited. And all three of us were interviewed. I've emailed the Chronnie asking they add at least a mention of Jayceen and Tori to the online version of the piece. Clear skies, patrick
This is a huge difference and I'm sure if they knew they would appreciate your mentioning this. Steve

We are still working on where the meteorite may have landed but initial information is looking good for a new meteorite fall in Utah. Here's the information that is available so far, but I am still waiting on some more ALLSKY data to come in. Did anyone happen to see anything? The is a report from a pilot who said that he saw it from Beaver UT, which is about 200 miles west of my best guess so far. East of Moab, UT a likely area. Anyone have any more info by any chance? -Barrett www.FallenStarHunters.com Based on data from three allsky cameras, this meteor was traveling on a heading of 260° about 30 km south of Grand Junction, CO. Its ground path was at least 86 km, its average speed was 18 km/s, and it was very shallow (~6°), burning from a height of 54 km to a height of 45 km over the recorded path. It terminated over the CO-UT border. It was a good candidate for a meteorite producer, but anything that dropped is going to be in hard terrain. Initial Reports: 28MAR2012 Kara Denver, Colorado USA 8:45 pm DST 3 seconds traveling north to south yellow ball, orange red outline, yellow tail brighter than moon no have no idea what this was, it was moving very fast, it was very large and bright with large (not really long) tail 28MAR2012 Kevin ORourke Orroyo Hondo,N.M. 2100 mst 3 seconds Northeast to Southwest from space to ground Green with yellow tail Very Bright not as bright as moon but brighter than Venus No Amazing visual,as I traveled west on the entrance road C.R. B007 headed toward my home from State Highway 522 North I was roughly 1/2 a mile onto the still paved road, when looking at the whereabouts of my home I saw a HUGE (Much larger than any other meteor I had ever seen) Fade out right about the position of where my house is located.I quickly dialed home and my wife answered and told me she was reading a bedtime story to our son.I can not believe how bright it was and how close it appeared. It seemed so much closer than say Arizona. The abrubt blackout above the perception of my home, had me somewhat concerned.I have heard of nothing since its sighting roughly 45 minutes ago. 3/28/2012 Nathan Castle Rock, Colorado, USA 2038 / MST 3-4 seconds Object was travelling Northeast to the Southwest. I was facing West Green near the head, yellow and orange through the tail. As bright as the moon was tonight (half moon) None that was observed. Saw a meteor tonight, around 20:38 MST. It was pretty big, compared to a shooting star. Driving west on Founders Parkway from Crowfoot Valley Road in Castle Rock. It moved from the Northeast to the Southwest, green, yellow and orange tail with a circular shape at the head. Size comparison- it was roughly the same size/shape at the head as a streetlight would be from a block away, or the same size as your pinky nail is at arms length. I am also a weather forecaster (USN 9 1/2 years, civilian 7 years). 28MAR2012 Mical rainer Cortez, CO,United States 2015mst 2sec N-S, western sky Green and orange Brighter than venus Yes Larger than venus 28MAR2012 Grace Grand junction, CO 8:30pm mountain 4-5 seconds Headed south by south west Blue body and yellow/orange long tail Bright as a firework, I would comparison it to the sun One whole piece that never broke. It was truly unbelievable to see. My brain coundly wrap itself around what it was seeing. Just amazing, was so low and close it seemed as though I could reach out and grab it! 28MAR2012 Scott taylor Albiquerque new mexico 20:00-21:00 5sec Facing north object was traveling east to west Yellowish Venus Yes Lots of fragments trailing behind 28MAR2012 Heather Ash Fork, AZ 20:15:00 Longer than normal, around 7 seconds Was traveling East on I-40. It went from north to south, seen on the left side of the highway Started out a normal white color of a falling star, then suddenly turned bright green! It was also very close to the ground as it flashed brightly then turned green. Very bright. Almost like a green flare from a firework. None noticeable It was such an amazing and bright event I felt I should rep 28MAR2012 Ray Wallace Durango, Colorado, USA 20:35, US Mountain DST About 3 to 4 seconds Low in W. N to S Facing W VERY bright green with one bright flash like lightning VERY bright, like moon Not sure, but one BRIGHT green flash near mid point in travel, like lightning Have seen MANY, by far the BRIGHTEST. She wasn't mentioned in the article but one of the original posters on this topic said she assisted. ________________________________ From: Steve Fisher <iotacass1@hotmail.com> To: utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com Sent: Thursday, March 29, 2012 4:35 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Patrick Wiggins and Phun with Physics I don't know if Jayceen was mentioned in the article.
