Happy Birthday William Herschel
Today is William Herschel's birthday. Significant since I am chasing his 2500 objects . . . Here is a nice article on him to enjoy. http://www.oneminuteastronomer.com/4902/william-herschel/ -- Jay Eads
Thanks for the post Jay, it was interesting reading. Didn't Herschel build the "Behemoth"? I recall it was a newtonian with a metal mirror. The tube was so long, it was held up by scaffolding and to move it to a new object required pulleys and such. That's a far cry from today's goto's :) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jay Eads" <jayleads@gmail.com> To: "Utah Astronomy" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Tuesday, November 15, 2011 6:25:52 AM Subject: [Utah-astronomy] Happy Birthday William Herschel Today is William Herschel's birthday. Joan, off the top of my head, it sounds like you are describing Lord Rosse's telescope in Ireland. I believe that was the first telescope to reveal the "spiral nebula", later to be discovered as galaxies. I'm sure others will correct me if I've got it wrong. Sorry, but I don't have time at the moment to verify this via the internet... You get a gold star Mat. I checked and it was called the Leviathan and was built for Williams Parsons, 3rd Earl of Rosse (not by Herschel). Wikipedia comes to the rescue. It was 72" in diameter and built in 1845 (whew even way off on the era) Thanks for the catch. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mat Hutchings (H USA)" <mat.hutchings@siemens.com> To: "Utah Astronomy" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Tuesday, November 15, 2011 10:26:23 AM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Happy Birthday William Herschel Joan, off the top of my head, it sounds like you are describing Lord Rosse's telescope in Ireland. Speculum! Gesundheit!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/40-foot_telescope The photograph of the frame taken by John Herschel is cool...I've never seen that before. Thanks Dave, My memory wasn't as bad as believed. Apparently, there was the Behemoth by Herschel and Lord Rosse's Leviathan. ----- Original Message ----- From: "David Bennett" <dlbennett@mac.com> To: "Utah Astronomy" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Tuesday, November 15, 2011 11:14:20 AM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Happy Birthday William Herschel Speculum!
