Hi Chuck No major time line but I'm just trying to help my friend Gary w/ collecting sand for a book about USA sands. I haven't talked w/ him about the framework of the book but his books are usually pretty interesting and well illustrated. I have had success in getting samples, I've contacted family and friends, associates and fellow crazies for samples and in the mail yesterday was 18 new US samples and over the last 2 days collected 14 samples from Maui. Hawaiian sands are highly prized, good for trades and that's where I've been doing good. I even have a sample of Trinity Site sand coming as well as Meteor Crater w/ it's shocked quartz and meteorite vapor dust. I got a photo from a HS classmate of him in Atlantic City putting sand into a baggie, big smile on his face. I really appreciate your help too!! One thing I'd love to get from Utah is Oolitic Sand from the Great Salt Lake, calcium based sand created by wave action I think. I'm not a sand collector but I like sand and have collected some over the years. I guess this project is just another way of getting out there for a reason. I had to rappel into a beach yesterday, about 170', then I realized I told no one where I was going or what I was doing. I just cruised the Maui north coast on Google Earth, made notes, prepped the gear and took off. I came back w/ a dz new samples yesterday and 3 today. Dianne and I went to Po'olenalena Beach and collected magnetite sand, my wife thinks I'm nuts but I had a ball. Rare earth magnet on a string and a pill bottle made the harvest fairly easy while I watched sea turtles swim by. IF you can, a handful of sand w/ the location marked on the bag is ideal. What can I do for you?? How you been?? I read the posts from SLAS and hope someday to meet you all. Di and I make it to Tucson for the rock and gem show in February, have a blast for 2 weeks then come home w/ our treasures, memories and photos. You ever been there?? YOU would love it, bring some money, there are things there you'll want that you didn't know you wanted. How's work?? You sound like sometimes you are in way too deep but I guess that's how it goes. You ever getting out this way?? You would love the summit!!! I'll send some photos tomorrow of beaches, grand daughter, summit, Hawaii. Hi Brent I think Chuck is going to retrieve additional Oolitic sand for me. Thank you for your effort, sands from the western USA is still needed, it's a big project we are doing and will take some time and I/we appreciate what people are doing for us. Brent, Chuck, et al, There is plenty of oolitic sand on the eastern shore of the Great Salt Lake. On your way to the Stansbury Island deposit, if you will take the I-80 7200 West exit and travel west on the parallel paved highway (old US 40) I think you can find all you will want. Specifically, after this access road makes a gentle bend to the southwest stop and examine the soil west of the road's built-up embankment - out in the weeds. If you find some sand there it will save a long trip to Stansbury. If not, no big loss. The access road continues to the new Saltaire facility where you can rejoin I-80; The small sample I sent to Rob was collected many years ago before access to the area to the north of this road was restricted for the bird sanctuary. Here is some information I ran across a while back while doing some meteorite research, hope it helps! -Barrett How to get there: Travel approximately 36 miles west of Salt Lake City on Interstate 80 until you reach the second Grantsville exit. Exit and turn west (left) onto the road to Stansbury Island (do not turn south to Grantsville). Travel about 6 miles on this main road until you reach an intersection with a stop sign on the west side of Stansbury Island. Turn west (left) and travel 0.5 miles to a sandy dune area adjacent to the road. Stop here and park on the edge of the road. Be careful not to get your vehicle stuck in the sand and watch out for the large trucks that use this road. Where to collect: Oolitic sand dunes are adjacent to the road and easily accessible in this area. Use a plastic bag or a bucket to collect the sand. Be careful not to disturb the vegetation that stabilizes the dunes. Geologic information: Oolitic sand is an unusual sediment that is found in and around the Great Salt Lake. Instead of forming from grains of mineral fragments washed down from higher ground, this sand formed within the Great Salt Lake. It is composed of tiny, light-brown, rounded oolites. Concentric layers built up around a central mineral fragment. An oolite has a shell of concentric layers of calcium carbonate that precipitated around a nucleus or central core. The nucleus is usually a tiny brine shrimp fecal pellet or a mineral fragment. Oolites form in shallow, wave-agitated water, rolling along the lake bottom and gradually accumulating more and more layers. My wife and I just returned from an afternoon collecting a few gallons of oolitic sand for Rob, at the location west of Stansbury Island (which is not currently an island due to low lake level). Couple of things to note: 1. The stop sign mentioned at the six mile mark on the road out to the island is long gone. Just look for a seldom-used road heading west a little past the gravel pit on your right against the side of the mountain. The road will be on your left, and it's easy to miss. 2. The "dunefields" are choked with native vegetation. The flats just beyond the dunes have been just ground down from vehicle traffic. It is impossible to find a pristine deposit of sand. Our samples are loaded with dead bugs, sticks, and rabbit turds. You'll need to wash and screen your sand for a clean sample. You may find a less contaminated source if you wander around for a few hours. We opted not to since it was 100 degrees F. Anywhere vehicles have driven has ground the sand down to just powder. You can get stuck with a low-chassis, rear-wheel drive car. Be careful. 3. "Don't disturb the vegetation" may have had meaning decades ago, when the directions to the site were probably written, but today the entire area is no longer pristine. We encountered large trucks hauling something all along the road, and many service pickups going each way. The area is not even close to pristine anymore, sadly. That's a shame . Would a 4WD vehicle help out any? If so, we could take my Jeep out and see if we can find something less disturbed... No thanks, Barrett, I have an Explorer that is 4WD. There are lots of areas that are relatively undisturbed, but the "dunefield" is actually immersed in scrub vegetation. Samples are full of sticks, dead bugs, "natural" contaminants that will have to be screened-out. You'll need a fine mesh to do it, many of these grains are sub-millimeter in size, although a portion range larger. 2-stage screening is probably warranted. There were at least a half dozen cars and trucks out there "recreating" while we were there, that is, apparently not connected to the commercial salt, mineral, and gravel businesses. The large "flats" with no vegetation has been churned into a fine powdery dust, so the best samples probably will come from the vegetated areas. Were it not for the dust and commercial traffic, the area would make a good observing site with much less light pollution than Stansbury, albeit more than Lakeside, which is another 20 minutes or so further west. CME Question On NASA's SOHO LASCO C3 image date 2014-07-05 01:42:00.0 They are showing a large straight line emanation from the sun in the 7 O'Clock position. I have never seen that before in any of the photos, and so far not found an explanation of what it is. Does anyone know? Interestingly enough, and apparently coincidental Dirk Ross ( http://lunarmeteoritehunters.blogspot.jp ) in Japan was telling me via Skype that a strange phenomenon has just started in the skies over Europe. Meteoritic dust is being illuminated in the night sky causing some weird and pretty night sky effects.
