Utah Astronomy friends. Could one of you who is a birder offer me a little bit of help off topic. I took a picture of one lonely lil' bird at This is The Place Park a couple of days ago. This was at 800mm and some digital zoom. (I love my new camera) I can't seem to find out what kind of bird he is. I'd appreciate your letting me know if you know. Thanks in advance. That was my original thought, also. Reinforced by checking at_www.allaboutbirds.org_. The male is truly beautiful, but Chuck is right as yours is the female. Look at the "moustaches" besides the beak. 73, lh Kestrel?

Looks like a consensus. I am not an avid birder, but to me he looks like an American Kestrel. ________________________________ From: Steve Fisher <iotacass1@hotmail.com> To: utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com Sent: Monday, March 5, 2012 3:02 PM Subject: [Utah-astronomy] OT for UA birders Utah Astronomy friends. Steve, I am no bird expert but it looks to me like a Prairie Falcon. I asked our Park wildlife biologist. She says it is indeed an American Kestrel, but more likely a male (based on the cap and head markings) and of course it is a species of falcon. A few years ago while waiting at the school bus stop with my son right in the City, I watched a Kestrel take a sparrow right out of the air just a few feet from where we were standing. They are neat birds. I'm sticking with female, based on Steve's photo and the breast markings. Differences between head markings are much more subtle between males and females, especially this time of year. I've been watching local Kestrels for 30 years. There might be a regional difference between those up north, and south. And I could be dead wrong, lol! SLC residents can take the frontage road next to I80 out towards Saltair this time of year, and with just 10x50 binoculars you will see lots of raptors. My last trip I counted 4 Kestrels, 2 Harriers and a Red Tail hawk. Over the years I've seen Bald and Golden eagles, roughlegged and Swainsons hawks. Perigrin and Prarie Falcons, foxes, Pronghorns, sparrows, swallows, and lots of goofy guys with big lenses. Even a crowd I call the Sunset Papparazi as well a brides dragging their wedding gowns through the mud for a picture with Antelope Island in the background. It's a great place to go during cloudy weather. As an aside, I've used all the popular birding field guides, but my current favorite and the one I've been using for last ten or twelve years is the *American Bird Conservancy's Field Guide "All The Birds of North America"* by Jack L. Griggs. The format is very useable, the illustrations excellent, and I have found it highly accurate. I am fortunate to own a first edition. ISBN 0-06- 273028-2.
