The best I could do tonight: http://www.slas.us/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=4872 -- Thanks for taking a look, Joe
Due to poor judgment, I got my family in a jam in the snow on a remote dirt road on Saturday and had to hike out for help. I'm usually better prepared than most (water, extra blankets, warm clothes, etc.) so I wasn't worried, just mad at myself. Walking in the evening with the conjunction in the western sky marking my progress actually made it fairly pleasant. The sky was truly glorious. And the Garfield County Sheriff's office was very kind and helpful and got us out of the snow before it got too late and cold. Yesterday afternoon we drove to Rainbow Point (staying on pavement this trip) to enjoy the clear but somewhat hazy skies. About 5:00 (so well before sunset) I noticed the crescent Moon, and remembering relative positions from the night before, and that it's been awhile since I've spotted Venus in the daytime, I looked about where I expected to see it and voila! There it was - no difficulty at all. It was getting very cold and my family wanted to go on, so I didn't also try for Jupiter. Anyone been able to catch Jupiter when the sun is still above the horizon? BTW, Joe - nice pics of the conjunction. Kim
Sorry about your getting stuck, Kim. But the conjunction really was fun, wasn't it? -- Joe ________________________________ From: Kim <kimharch@cut.net> To: 'Utah Astronomy' <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Monday, February 27, 2012 8:21 AM Subject: [Utah-astronomy] Epic (a bit OT) and Venus Due to poor judgment, I got my family in a jam in the snow on a remote dirt road on Saturday and had to hike out for help. Thanks, Joe. All in all quite a memorable day. I could hardly walk Sunday morning, but my arthritic hips, bum knee and sore muscles are quickly recovering. Kim, I trust your ability to take precautions for your family's welfare. But please, don't EVER become a story on the national news because of a "lapse of judgement"! I hate going to friend's funerals. Been all too frequent lately. I'm hoping that you come to MINE. And have at least ONE good thing to say to those assembled, on my behalf. "He loved his pet cat", lol. ;-) C.
Thanks, Chuck. I admit to a lapse of good judgment, but it would only have truly become an epic (mountaineer's term for a climb gone south) if I hadn't been prepared the way I always try to be. As it was, I was sore from an eight-mile unanticipated hike, but prepared for it. I haven't lost family or friends to accidents, only illness, and I thank the good Lord every day for that. On the first one you took I couldn't help but notice on the enlarged version all the stars that were in the field of view. Some of them were pretty darn red. Amazing. I was also out these past few night doing the same thing. I decided to shoot my photos earlier than Joe as I prefer the dark blue colors of the early evening sky as opposed to black. The first was taken on Feb 24th when I had my scope out at a park near my home and some of the neighbor kids couldn't help but be fascinated with their closer look at the planets: http://www.slas.us/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=4875 The next two were taken on Feb 26 from the parking lot of the Reams Food Store near the corner of 35th South and 72nd West: http://www.slas.us/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=4878 about 5 minutes after the above was taken I noticed a jetliner heading towards the "planetary constellation". As luck would have it, the plane with its subsequent light trail headed straight towards the Moon http://www.slas.us/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=4881 ________________________________ From: Joe Bauman <josephmbauman@yahoo.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Sunday, February 26, 2012 9:25 PM Subject: [Utah-astronomy] tonight's conjunction The best I could do tonight: http://www.slas.us/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=4872 -- Thanks for taking a look, Joe _______________________________________________ Utah-Astronomy mailing list http://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/utah-astronomy Send messages to the list to Utah-Astronomy@mailman.xmission.com The Utah-Astronomy mailing list is not affiliated with any astronomy club.
