I saw a line of sunspots with my Sunspoter. In other words some of the spots did not look like spots but were connected so they looked like a dash. http://spaceweather.com/ reports a huge solar flare from sunspot AR1515.
Lots of small prominences over about 75% of the solar circumference. Much detail visible in the PST on the solar disk this afternoon, more than I've seen in a long time! Not all of it is associated with sunspot groups visible in white light (conventional solar filters). The white-light view with the Baader filter is impressive, especially compared to last week's blank solar surface, but not nearly as active as the view in H-a. Even when the sun is pretty boring in white light, there's usually plenty of things going on in H-a. Chuck's Advice Of The Day: Get thee a PST or better, if thy wallet allows. Question: Why do most solar flares that may instigate auroral activity usually happen during full moon? You can't blame the werewolves for this, Larry. I'm thinking government/alien conspiracy. Or maybe the Illuminati. Or the Brownies. Or Cosmopolitan magazine. Can't trust any of 'em.

Karma? 2nd answer: blame Patrick. I really did not think the moon could affect solar activity. Its full tonight will we see Aurora? Lots of small prominences over about 75% of the solar circumference.

Prominence action is a bit diminished today, although lots of smallish ones are visible along the solar circumference. No large ones as of the time of this post. Those with H-a capability will notice at least two dark streaks on the solar disk. Those are probably prominence "shadows". If they were at the solar limb, silhouhetted against the blackness, they could be visible as impressive prominences. Much disk detail! The little PST continues to pay it's own way. Best astro-money I've ever spent, slightly behind Coulter Optical, Cave, and UO decades ago. Who's got a white-light report? Too busy today to drag out the Baader scope, at least for the next few hours. Happy 4th of July! You ARE flying Old Glory today, aren't you? If not, the next boat to Abu Dhabi leaves tomorrow and your ancestors who brought you here are ashamed. Get packing. Have fun. We just might think of you in the future. Maybe.
Hey Chuck, do we get an answer on why solar flares that produce aurora occur more often during a full moon?

A brief break in the rain clouds! Continued minimal prominence action, although there is one medium-szed, faintish arch visible as of this posting. Surface detail is terrific, including some "silhouette" prominences associated with the largest sunspot group.
Some really great prominences visible right now. Delicate loops! Hurry!
Just before sunset and the prominence action continues. Looks like a major sunspot group will rotate into view in the next day or two.
And here it is: http://spaceweather.com/gallery/indiv_upload.php?upload_id=68613&PHPSESSID=r... This is the one that was producing the looping, fountain-like prominences the other day. On Sun, Jul 8, 2012 at 8:20 PM, Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote:

Incredible photo! The conditions must have been excellent to get that detail in only 20 exposures. It doesn't look overly sharpened at all. In fact, it looks like you're about to land on the sun! Jared On Tue, Jul 10, 2012 at 2:51 PM, Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote:

What is the individual exposure -- 3.4 ms. Does that mean 3.4 microseconds? Is a microsecond 1/1000 of a second? I believe it's milliseconds, in other words hundredths of a second, but I could be mistaken. Either way, pretty short. On Tue, Jul 10, 2012 at 3:35 PM, Joe Bauman <josephmbauman@yahoo.com> wrote:

No, milliseconds are thousands of a second - meaning 3.4ms is 1/300th second exposures. Not really fast at all for most modern CCD cameras. Microseconds would be one millionth of a second and I don't think there are cameras capable of shutter speeds in that range. Thanks Jared, in retrospect you are 100% correct. I believe he was also using photographic-density Baader film to enable the short exposures. On Jul 10, 2012 3:45 PM, "Jared Smith" <jared@smithplanet.com> wrote:

Many prominences visible today along most of the solar limb. Also much surface detail as seen in the PST. God Bless the man who designed the PST. It saved me from having to cobble-together a homemade coronascope of questionable safety, despite the decades-old S&T articles, lol. Yes, I managed to accumulate all the materials over the years, and still may build it one day for no other reason than at my age, it sounds mildly dangerous and beats blowing-up model airplanes with fire-crackers. Just barely. Ant-hills, on the other hand... ;-) In the white light scope, the sunspot group on the surface of the solar disk is even more impressive. S&T says it's visible to the (protected) naked-eye, but in Baader visual film the solar disk is still much too bright at 0X to see anything that small against the glare. Take their advice and use a dark welder's filter of the proper grade, #13 or #14. You could also try visual Baader material along with a ND filter (an eyepiece moon filter of 13% transmission should do the trick) and see if you can spot the big group without magnification.

Coincidentally, my late father served at Lackland AFB in the late '50's. Of course, then the front-line fighter was still the P-51 Mustang. I still remember leafing-through his unit yearbooks. Sadly, his second-wife got them after his death, and there is no knowing where they are today. She died only a year after he did, decades ago. What a loss.

Steve, where do you get off questioning the patriotism of people who do not share your opinions. Is there a clause in the US Constitution that requires flying a flag on the 4th? Setting of fireworks?

I m sick and tired of the attitude you must agree with me or you are unpatriotic.
Steve, how would feel if someone questioned your patriotism on the 4th of july, with a family member passing away this morning? Where did you learn that this is OK? I understand, Erik.

Steve, mine flies 24/7, 365 days. Re your grandson: Dan's older brother is retired AF. The Force (pun intended) really turned his life around. Taught survival training for about 15 years, then rest of service was in SERE. Now employed by the FBI, though not as an agent. And, working on a PHD, to boot. 73, lh On 7/4/2012 3:41 PM, Steve Fisher wrote:

Hi Steve, We flew the Bennington Flag, which has special meaning for us. One of the Revolutionary War veterans whose daguerreotypes I own was the last survivor of the Battle of Bennington. I know the actual flag -- which is in the Bennington Museum -- has been assessed as having been made early in the 19th century as part of the Bennington Day celebrations, but we love it. Its union has a big 76 on it, as well as stars. -- Joe ----- Original Message ----- From: Larry Holmes <larry@kijoda.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Cc: Sent: Thursday, July 5, 2012 9:55 AM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] The Sun or Grandson in this case. Good on you, Mate, as the saying goes. I would enjoy seeing it some time, Joe. My son, Joe, lives in Fredricksburg, VA, right in "the belly of the beast", as the revolutionary war goes. I have been privileged (and honored) to visit many of the battlefields. 73, lh On 7/5/2012 10:39 AM, Joe Bauman wrote:
