Here's a list of what I've heard so far will be on offer at tomorrow's swap meet at SPOC (starts at 4:00 p.m.): One or two small Dobson telescopes Edmund "Cherry Bomb" Astroscan Classic Edmund 8x50 finder Several eyepieces 50mm guide scope Celestron drive corrector The 40cm (16") full thickness primary, the secondary and some of the hardware from the original SPOC telescope Plus (and this is not official yet) but there may also be one of the original Coulter Dobs that a guy has had in storage for years. And I hear one of the local SLAS pack rats is clearing out his garage and storage shed. Alas, he's asked I not list the stuff he'll be bringing. See you at SPOC tomorrow! patrick
With 2 hours to go, the weather looks fairly typical for August in Utah. Is this thing going ahead regardless of weather? I may tool-on out if it's a "GO".
It was blowing a couple of hours ago and now we've got sunshine. Like you said, typical weather for Utah in August. I'll be there with my wares at 4 and looking for food at 6. pw On 18 Aug 2007, at 14:03, Chuck Hards wrote:

We certainly dodged a bullet! It was completely overcast, blowing hard, and very threatening when I left the house, but my arrival at SPOC was met with sunshine. The afternoon was very pleasant and it was good to spend a few hours with old friends and meet new ones as well. I even managed to sell a few goodies. One of the highlights of the afternoon was Ann Blanchard's home-made dolmathes. I ate half a dozen, at least! Although I couldn't stay for the star-party, it looked like the weather just might continue to clear as the evening progressed. My heartfelt thanks to SLAS and the organizers of this event, it was a Saturday afternoon very well spent. On 8/18/07, Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com> wrote:

How true. Just enough clouds in the afternoon to keep things pleasant. By nightfall all of the sky was clear except for the northern horizon where the clouds provided an excellent (and safely distant) lightning storm. A band of clouds did pass through about 10:30 but by 11:00 they had gone and all the sky was clear. Oh, and let's not forget the fireworks. Saturday was Stansbury Day and right at 9:30 the sky just across the water to the south lit up with celebratory fireworks. Fireworks to the south, lightning to the north and a beautiful sky overhead! WOW!!!

Rodger Fry deserves the kudos for putting the day together. He done good! BTW, earlier I mentioned that one of the items on offer at the swap meet would be the optics from the original SPOC scope. After much discussion on line Friday night and Saturday morning Bruce Grim (who had bought the optics back from SLAS some time ago) decided to remove the optics from the swap meet. Perhaps that was the bad news. However, the good news is that he has offered to donate them back to SLAS for use as part of SLAS's participation in the U of U's remote southern Utah observatory. This is provided, of course, that SLAS determines there is enough interest on the part of SLAS members and such a telescope can be incorporated into the U's plans. pw
