Hey all, I was delighted to get a nice night out of town, and even though it was a little cloudy, I had a great time out at Lakeside tonight! I was able to locate Comet Garradd pretty easily, and fortunately that part of the sky stayed pretty open most of the night, so I kept going back over to it. Some meteor activity, with one I noticed as particularly bright. It was warm and pleasant all night, but as the moon sunk lower, more clouds moved in and pretty much ended it about 2am. Chrismo, I love the pics of the terrain moonlite. I've always loved taking long exposures like that. ++++++++++++++++++ Troy Davidson, KF7MTE www.istroyworking.com On Mon, Aug 8, 2011 at 4:15 AM, Chrismo <djchrismo@gmail.com> wrote:

Thanks for the pix! I really enjoy Lakeside -- except for the mosquito bites that are still itching, dating back to Friday night and Saturday morning! -- Joe ________________________________ From: Chrismo <djchrismo@gmail.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Monday, August 8, 2011 4:15 AM Subject: [Utah-astronomy] Sunday night at Lakeside Hey all, I was delighted to get a nice night out of town, and even though it was a little cloudy, I had a great time out at Lakeside tonight! Thanks for the comments. I really like it out there too, so peaceful. When the air is warm it's just a pleasure. Funny, I don't remember getting bitten much last year. I keep forgetting the bug spray and then once I arrive remember that I'm going to be eaten alive. I'm just learning to use my DSLR, so alot of my pictures aren't turning out that well, but I'm sure in time they will get better. I don't have any big plans to do much astrophotography with the Dob, but I am planning to buy a coupler for the camera so I can try it. Pretty sure I told you guys before, I'm a total hack :) On Mon, Aug 8, 2011 at 10:23 AM, Joe Bauman <josephmbauman@yahoo.com> wrote:

It's funny, but twelve years ago only a handful of people ever went to Lakeside, and most of them hated it because of the dust. Now it seems that it's the "place to be" if you only can drive an hour from home. On 8/8/11, Joe Bauman <josephmbauman@yahoo.com> wrote:

I don't really mind the drive or the dust. I'm always happy to just get a night out, and often find myself just looking at the sky as opposed to doing any "serious" study. I think my next venture out will be to Pit & Pole, which I haven't visited before. Lastnight was the only trip I'll get this week tho. I think the mosquitoes are a new thing out at Lakeside, we never used to have any bugs. I am betting it is related to the amount of rain we have had, and especially the bigger downpours that left standing pools long enough to hatch the mosquitoes. I also think there are several springs that used to dry up quickly, but are still burbling out this year. Jo
I think Jo is right on with this. In the last several years I never got a mosquito bite at Lakeside but with all the water and with the ground saturated there is activity in the springs. The bugs at Pit n Pole seem to have calmed down, a month or two ago they were bad. I wonder how Wolf Creek is now that it is opened? I imagine there are lots of mosquitoes up there right now. Deet is good until the Thermacell gets up and running though. http://www.thermacell.com/mosquito-repellent (at Walmart) On Mon, Aug 8, 2011 at 11:12 AM, Josephine Grahn <bsi@xmission.com> wrote:
