Patrick Wiggins has apparently discovered his third supernova, and this one is bright enough to see visually in apertures as small as six inches. Well-done, Patrick! http://www.skyandtelescope.com/astronomy-news/observing-news/possible-bright...

It has been confirmed. Peak brightness should be in about six days. I hope the weather clears and I can get out by then. -- Joe Sent from my iPhone

That is really cool that you found a supernova! I'm going to look for it Saturday night. I have been hating this wind. Going up to the dark site Mountain Meadows. No ghosts there! I fixed the issue with the focuser so I need to give the scope a test drive. Supposed to warm up by Saturday so I'll be more comfortable than last month. Is there a method to finding supernovas? I mean pick a bunch of galaxies to image and see what data is there? I like this dso-browser program I found on the internet. Looks like a 9mm Nagler would really show some detail on this spiral. https://dso-browser.com/deep-sky/8133/fireworks-galaxy/ngc-6946/galaxy Debbie On 2017-05-18 13:31, Larry Holmes wrote:

Debbie, Patrick uses what is probably the only way an amateur can be of discovering a supernova. He has programmed his telescope to go to 300 target galaxies a night and take a short exposure of each. Then he compares the photos to his previous views of the same galaxies. In more than 1,000 nights of this grueling work, he has discovered three verified supernovas. Sent from my iPhone

I should have said "be reasonably sure" of finding a supernova. Sent from my iPhone
