Re: [Utah-astronomy] In today's Tribune
Do you think that - maybe - we need to plan a group trip to Hawaii to see the Mauna Kea observatory? Rob could plan it. We could take in a little diving, I mean we might as well while we are there. Guy could plan it. Anyone interested? Rob and Guy especially...
Those are two activities you don't want to combine--at least within a period of a couple of days. Going from a few meters underwater to 14,000' above is a fairly decent way to enjoy the bends, at least according to what I've read.
I am all in favor of being there for several days. In between observatory visiting, diving, and airline flying we could lie on the beach, site see, eat. I think I could keep busy - or not busy - which is a goal of mine right now. -A

Hummm -- sounds sweet. Remember the trip from SLC to La Paz for the 1991 eclipse? That was a chartered flight, which kept the cost reasonable. -- Joe

it's highly recommended that visitors to MKO stop at the Visitor Information Station (9300ft) for an hour or so to acclimate before going to MKO summit. Haleakala is only 10K ft. and it's a quick trip up and then just go slow for an hour or so before normal activity, you will feel the altitude and some functions are slower. Last trip to MKO, I had a hard time writing clearly but then I didn't have my glasses on either. Aloha Rob
That's why you visit the observatory the first day, and dive the rest of the week! Of course you have to quit 12-24 hrs before boarding a plane. The bends are no fun! Quoting Michael Carnes <michaelcarnes@earthlink.net>:
