Anybody else thinking "bowling ball"? On Fri, Mar 26, 2010 at 10:34 AM, Rodger C. Fry <rcfry@comcast.net> wrote:

Funny you should mention this project. I have been in the planning/construction stage of this project for a few months now. It's actually doable for less than $150 if you are patient and use Ksl.com and ebay. I am trying to come up with a way to get the balloon to not pop as low (subjective term I know) as they did. If anyone is interested in doing this project, drop me a line. I'd like to learn from you as well.

This has been going on here in Utah for a few years now. Here is a program that Weber State and Utah State have been doing. If you are interested, they do take volunteers to help out on the ground crew. There are a lot of regulations that you need to follow for here in the US. http://space.weber.edu/harbor/ Thanks. NASA has chosen four groups of high school students to work with them to do much the same thing. One of those groups is located here in Utah, the Stansbury Park High School. Their advisor (who I'm pretty sure is on this list) has launched cameras with balloons before. I think the most recent launched from somewhere in Colorado and managed to reach something like 33 km before the balloon burst. DNews had a writeup on them. patrick On 26 Mar 2010, at 10:34, Rodger C. Fry wrote:

Not to burst any bubbles, (pun intended), but at this stage, it's pretty much a "me too" project unless you take it to the next stage. The next obvious step is to couple a rocket to boost the camera beyond balloon range, once max balloon altitude has been reached. They used to call the combination a "rockoon". (I'm not kidding!). I'm amazed that cameras are being recovered. Clearly you have to wait for a day when the jet stream is not anywhere close. And hope that Delta Airlines doesn't suck one up an engine in an admittedly one-in-a-billion chance. Cool stuff!
