For weekend observing - new supernova in M51
Reprinted from a Bill Ferris posting on Cloudynights - ============= The International Astronomical Union announces in IAU Circular 8553 the discovery of supernova 2005cs in M51, the Whirlpool Galaxy. The supernova was discovered by Wolfgang Kloehr the night of June 27-28. The estimated magnitude at the time of discovery was 13.5 and the supernova is expected to brighten over the next several nights. The supernova is located about an arcminute southwest of the galaxy's nucleus. Here are the coordinates of supernova 2005cs: RA: 13h 29m 53s Dec.: +47d 10m 36s Regards, Bill in Flagstaff ========================== Enjoy - Canopus56 __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Joe, download a good photo first, if you look. In the 32", there were several possible "candidates", but since we didn't have a photo, none of us were sure if the bright spots we saw were the supernova, a foreground star, or H-II region. Bruce and I speculated that it may not even be superimposed on the spiral arms, no way to know without seeing a photo, or very precise coordinates first. Nothing really jumped out at us. Is the SN still visible? THanks, Joe

Thanks, I know there are a lot of bright stars in and around M51, I guess most or all in the foreground. Does anyone know whether it's faded much by now? Take care, Joe

Haven't tried myself, but here is link to a page with current amateur reports ("mag 14.1 and rising" and "2005/07/05.003 - 14.6[v]") - http://www.rochesterastronomy.org/sn2005/sn2005cs.html at: http://www.rochesterastronomy.org/supernova.html See also - SNWeb page for sn2005cs (good image map) http://www.astrosurf.com/snweb2/2005/05cs/05csHome.htm SEDS page for sn2005cs http://www.seds.org/messier/more/m051_sn2005cs.html Enjoy - Canopus56(Kurt) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Kurt, were you at SPOC Sunday night? Did you see M51 in the 32"? C. --- Canopus56 <canopus56@yahoo.com> wrote: __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com

Chuck, I was, but Grim Scope stayed on Comet 9P till I left about 12:45 am. Maybe Patrick or Mark slewed over there after everyone left. No reports from Patrick or Mark. Ironically, Mark and Bruce were testing the 32" on the night after the discovery (before ICC circular came out). I happened to be out at SPOC that night. They invited me in for about 5 minutes of viewing M51. Of course, I was too busy "oouing" and "aying" from being able to see some distinct arm structure in M51 for the first time and probably blew right past the SN. - Canopus56(Kurt) ____________________________________________________ Sell on Yahoo! No report from me because I did not see it. Compared the image on line to what I saw. No luck. Patrick
Kurt, up until about T-10 minutes, Mark was slewing around the sky, and Bruce and I did peek at M-51 for a few minutes. I noticed some H-II regions but didn't notice anything obviously stellar. The view was pretty darn good, I must admit I would have felt like Lord Rosse had I been wearing buckled shoes. C. --- Canopus56 <canopus56@yahoo.com> wrote:

If I ever see you in buckled shoes, I will lay off the Lord Calvert. ;)
