I received word last evening that Earth was about to be visited by a tiny minor planet called 2012 XE54. I followed it for a while but it was moving so fast (max was just over 700"/min) I couldn't do much more than look and alert the Minor Planet Mailing List that it was coming. Shortly after it disappeared from my sky an MPMLer was able to pick it up with a bigger scope and managed to image it as it passed through an open cluster: http://www.flickr.com/photos/66276483@N06/8264503609/ Looks like we dodged another bullet. :) But then maybe this was just a preview of what's to come on the 21st. patrick p.s. Totally off topic but since I have folks' attention I've got a couple of fluorescent light fixtures I removed from my unheated hanger (apparently some fluorescents don't do well in the cold). I've got no use for them so they're free to anyone who has a use for them. Just be sure to use them in a heated area.
I caught that several hours ago, but thanks Patrick! On Dec 11, 2012 4:15 PM, "Wiggins Patrick" <paw@wirelessbeehive.com> wrote:

They're shooting at us already. Their aim will be refined before the 21st for their last shot. ________________________________ From: Wiggins Patrick <paw@wirelessbeehive.com> To: utah astronomy listserve utah astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Tuesday, December 11, 2012 4:13 PM Subject: [Utah-astronomy] Another "near" miss I received word last evening that Earth was about to be visited by a tiny minor planet called 2012 XE54. Ya know, if the world ends this month, I'm good with it. The ex wont get any more alimony checks. And retirement starts 15 years sooner. ;-) On Dec 11, 2012 4:51 PM, "Brent Watson" <brentjwatson@yahoo.com> wrote:

Man, that thing was moving fast. It would be my luck to have the world end on the 21st (23rd using my correlation coefficient) a couple of days (or on the day) I get off for a 10-day period from work. Having it happen on the day I start my vacation would lead me to believe my correlation coefficient is the correct one. On Dec 11, 2012, at 4:13 PM, Wiggins Patrick <paw@wirelessbeehive.com> wrote:

It all sort of stinks for a few reasons, but on the bright side, Chuck's ex is SOL. Along with my creditors. By the way, I'm not a drinking man (although there have been times...) but I think those who do should stock up now. The end-of-the-world rush will probably make any holiday rush look like a walk in the park. I'm giving my last "All I Need to Know I Learned from the Greeks" evening program on the 21st along with our Not-the-end-of-the-world Star Party. I include a segment about the "perfect" alignment of the sun with the galactic center on the 21st, one of the so-called scientific evidences for the end of the world. (The "alignment" of course, is due to precession, discovered by Hipparchus - hence the tie-in with my evening program.) Oh, and I'm sure it was all planned by either ancient aliens or the intelligent designer. I start 12 days off on the 21st, as well. I'd hate to be working when Armageddon comes, and miss it. Hoping there will be zombies. I want to try out my WWI vintage Mauser rifle, as well as my totally illegal double-barrel 12g Interarms sawed-off. :-)
