Tonight is the peak for the Geminid meteor shower. From what I saw Saturday night, it should be a good one. I saw anywhere from 30-40 Saturday night. The meteors were just shooting across the sky while we were imaging with my DSLR camera. One meteor looked like a roman candle as it headed south and lingered like a firework. And this was before midnight. I'm hoping for an even better show tonight. Debbie
I was up at about 5:00 am this morning (12-13) taking a soak in my hot tub, and saw quite a number of them as well, probably a half dozen or so in 15-20 minutes, in suburban-light polluted skies. All were real attention getters. Also saw what I think was the ISS passing by from south to north along the eastern sky, but haven't looked at a tracking program for a while to confirm it; large, very bright satellite-like object. Here's what Science @ NASA had to say in their ISS forecast last night:
STATION approx. vis. mag. -1
Date Dur. Lit Dur. Max. mm/dd Rise Set mm:ss mm:ss Elev.
12/14 06:03:24am SW NE 10:09 05:30 86 NW Patrick
I went out about an hour before this morning's peak. Average was just over one per minute. Pretty good show. Also tried having a look at the comet but by that time is was pretty well down in the muck. The Geminids have a secondary peak this afternoon during daylight our time but it might be worthwhile to head out after dark to watch for stragglers. Patrick
