Re: [Utah-astronomy] Ebony Star
Chuck, What is PPE and where do I buy the acetone? My Ebony Star probably could use a cleaning and waxing. Thanks, Debbie
Hi Debbie: PPE is Personal Protective Equipment, in this case meaning rubber gloves and an organic-filter cartridge respirator (what spray-painters wear) if you have poor ventilation. Do it outdoors and you're OK without a mask. Don't do it indoors if there are open flames in the house (pilot lights, water heaters) or no ventilation. You're only dabbing some on a rag and wiping, not splashing the stuff about liberally. Acetone is available in quart cans at Fred Meyer or any hardware store, on the paint aisle. Or, some fingernail-polish removers are acetone. You could use that and get a "lemony fresh" scent to boot! Acetone, like any solvent, is only dangerous if not handled properly. Repeated skin exposure can leach the lipids out of your skin, and cause liver damage. Inhalation is dangerous of course, and the stuff is explosively flammable. And our mothers have been taking their fingernail polish off with it for decades. Now there are less hazardous substitutes, but alas, like most substitutes don't work as well. Using commercial cleaners usually leaves a residue that solvents don't. C. --- UTAHDEB@aol.com wrote:
