Two points: 1) I downloaded and played around with the Star Map 3D astronomy app mentioned. Hmmm. The UI is not especially friendly but the graphics are pretty. For $2, it's OK but not great. My collection of astronomy apps for my iPhone and iPad is... let's just say it's extensive. I still prefer Sky Safari 3 for iOS devices. http://www.southernstars.com/products/skysafari/index.html I use it to control my telescope at star parties. The wifi connection between my phone and telescope is always a hit with viewers. I just loves me some iOS astronomy apps. 2) Yes, we still play Cosmic Light Shows here at the planetarium. http://clarkplanetarium.org/venue/cosmic-light-shows/ Seth -----Original Message----- From: utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Daniel Holmes Sent: Thursday, October 25, 2012 10:00 PM To: Utah Astronomy Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Star Map for iOS. Oh, I agree, Sky Safari is probably the best of the astronomy apps on iOS devices...but this was free, so I wanted to take a look at it...I had Astromist on my Palm Tungsten, and it was pretty good, but it's iOS version has a lot of performance problems. The light shows--they aren't quite the same as the old laser shows at the Hansen Planetarium. I've enjoyed the U2 show at the Clark, and have plans to see the Holiday one next month. I love the new effects and visuals that are possible with the new system, but there was a certain charm to the crudeness of the early shows. Speaking of the old Hansen, one that I always thought was a good time was the electricity show--I remember my girlfriend at the time getting freaked out by the guy standing next to the tesla coil with the fluorescent tubes and having them light up. You're referring to the ZAP! show, ca. 1987. It was awesome. It used a 2M volt Tesla Coil and a bunch of other high-voltage gadgetry. I used to do school shows with it. The climax of the show involved a performer getting barefoot, stepping onto a metal disk that was itself at the center of a 4' diameter glass disk supported on glass columns that hydraulically elevated above the stage. Another performer would hook the Tesla Coil up to the metal plate, spritz the other performer's feet with salt water (to ensure a good contact) and let the electrons fly. Lightning shooting out of the performer's head and fingertips! It really hurt, but while you doing it you were having so much fun waving your arms around and shooting lightning out of your body that you didn't really mind the pain too much. The audience loved it. It's a miracle no one got killed. Seth, I have the SS-3 (Pro) also, on my I pad. I have yet to get my Orion bluetooth to communicate with my Nexstar, but am guessing I need a different driver. Also, the hand control is the old style that is not upgradeable, so I might get a new one. Just been putting it off, you know. 73 On 10/26/2012 8:54 AM, Seth Jarvis wrote:

Larry, I bought the "Sky-Fi" (Wi-Fi) dongle that connects to the HC on either my C11 or C6, and SkySafari works great with either scope.
