OT Want Ad: netbook computer
I suspect some of you may be dumping your netbooks to upgrade to an Ipad. If so, I am interested in picking up a used netbook with at least two USB 2.0 ports for use as a dedicated small astro imaging computer in the $125-$150 price port range. I decided I don't want to haul around my main writing-accounting laptop to remote sites for astro imaging. Clear Skies, Kurt c a n o p u s 5 6 at y a h o o dot c o m
Kurt, I tried sending you a note directly but I'm not sure it got to you. By "netbook" do you mean a laptop computer or something else? One thing to note, a small netbook may not have the horsepower to do the imaging. I've got a Dell Mini 10, and much more than web browsing and Word really tasks it... Dan On May 26, 2011, at 11:25 PM, Canopus56 wrote:

I have tested the ACER netbook mentioned earlier and it seems as powerful as my old laptop. But you need Microsoft XP and not Windows 7 Starter which has limited functionality. -----Original Message----- From: utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Daniel Holmes Sent: Friday, May 27, 2011 8:15 AM To: Utah Astronomy Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] OT Want Ad: netbook computer One thing to note, a small netbook may not have the horsepower to do the imaging. I spent a lot of time trying to collimate my scope before going out tonight. I ran some star tests and it all looked good. I think it made an improvement in the image even tho the seeing was still not great. You can see the head of the storm in the northern hemisphere. It is flipped n/s. http://www.slas.us/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=4322 Cheers, David
Best one yet. Well done. You note the storm is in the north but on the image it appears to be in the south. It might help to either flip the image right side up or note in the text that south is up. patrick On 28 May 2011, at 12:33, David Rankin wrote:

I rotated it around to give a different perspective. It is south pole up. Cheers, David On 5/28/2011 2:31 PM, Patrick Wiggins wrote:

Here is the setup I am using to shoot my planet shots. http://www.slas.us/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=4324&g2_imageViewsIndex=1 I am going to upgrade to a PGR Flea3 CCD planetary cam soon, so my DMK21 will be for sale soon. Cheers, David On 5/28/2011 2:56 PM, David Rankin wrote:

Kurt, See http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834215094. This netbook was $204 last week. It is hard to find netbooks with Windows XP on them. Windows XP is much more compatible with many of the astronomy hardware drivers - but even so with the latest XP SP3 updates you need to install many drivers in safe mode and leave the hardware plugged in after rebooting from safe mode until it loads in normal windows. This is true of the Starlight Xpress cameras and the Microtouch focusers. Then everything works fine. If the hardware was already installed before the SP3 update it remains working fine - no reinstall needed.
