Hi Folks, Although the smoke's pretty obvious here in N Utah, H-a light comes through with remarkable clarity. There's some pretty great prominences today. If you have the gear and the daylight time, enjoy! If you'd like to have a look through my scope (I'm in Orem), you can contact me off the list. Ciao, John
Thanks for the heads up John. I had a look late this afternoon. I think that's the first time I've seen three huge prominences so close together and taking up a quarter of the entire limb. On 20 Aug 2015, at 11:25, John M. Craig <jmcraig@xmission.com> wrote:

I posted a picture of two of them on SLAStalk. The long bridge didn't come out good enough. On Aug 20, 2015 9:33 PM, "Wiggins Patrick" <paw@digis.net> wrote:

Sieg's is not the first mention here on Utah-Astronomt of stuff on SLAS Talk. With so many folks having migrated from Utah-Astronomy to SLAS Talk, anytime I've something to post these days I have to decide which of the two places to post it. (I'd prefer to not post to both places as I'm pretty sure most that moved to SLAS Talk still have a UA account). So I'm wondering. Is it time to think about closing Utah-Astronomy and have everyone move to SLAS Talk? SLAS Talk, BTW, is not just for SLAS members, rather it's open to all. Not everyone wants to be on Facebook. I know several who positively won't use the site. It would not be fair to force all interested in Utah astronomy issues to open Facebook accounts. And while technically SLAS Talk isn't only for SLAS members, its name sure implies it is. Utah Astronomy, however, has no such implication. First, there are 69 people on SLAS-talk and 250+ on UA. Don't think that qualifies as everyone has moved to SLAS-talk. Secondly, some UA posters did not like SLAS business being discussed on this board, which IMHO is totally appropriate. SLAS-Talk is where SLAS business can be discussed appropriately. Third, UA has a broader membership of all persons interested in astronomy throughout the state, for example the Ogden members and Utah valley members, as well as the St. George members not just members of SLAS, That implies broader networking and I like that a lot. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joe Bauman via Utah-Astronomy" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> To: "Utah Astronomy" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Thursday, August 20, 2015 10:17:31 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] UA to SLAS Talk? I think it is just plain disruptive for a person to have to stop and think where to place a post (not my words). I do have a Facebook site, but check it only a few times per month. I have yet to visit SLAS Talk. BTW, I am posting here even tho my '15 dues have yet to be paid mainly because Patrick refused to accept a check from Carol "as it was too difficult for him to handle a paper transaction anymore". Sounds like something out of DC..... 73

Apologies for the confusion. I'm pretty sure it would be illegal (or at east "not nice") to not accept a paper payment. So, yes, I do accept paper but I also remind them of the online method when that has happened. In most cases, as was the case here, members then tend go go electronic. So, "got paper?", see me at most any SLAS function. Well, except at Sun parties as those are held when I'm still in my light-proof box of dirt... :) Clear skies! patrick On 24 Aug 2015, at 11:58, Joan Carman <jcarman6@q.com> wrote:

I agree with Joan. SLAS does not represent Utah as a whole. The central and southern Utah astro population continues to grow and may outnumber the SLAS roster one of these days, plus we have out-of-state members here on the list. And I am of a like mind with Joe on this. I am not on Facebook and have no intentions of setting up an account any time soon, for more than one reason. So I hope that the SLAS emails continue to go out with important messages and updates because I'm not going anywhere besides the SLAS website. Online activities take such a bite out of our lives as it is, I'm for minimizing it as much as possible. Maybe I'll change my mind when I retire, but right now life is too full of activities away from the keyboard and discretionary time is always in short supply. Adding yet another online place to visit and maintain isn't helping the mitigation. That said, U-A can shut down at anytime and not break my heart, but I do find it useful. It's not much work moderating this list, I think Rich would agree. My 2 cents. On Thu, Aug 20, 2015 at 10:07 PM, Wiggins Patrick <paw@digis.net> wrote:

I'll add my voice here as well. I am a SLAS member and I appreciate basic notices about SLAS events etc being put on here but agree it should not take over the list. I however do not like Facebook. I will not be very likely to create an account and participate in the Facebook site. If you are interested in outreach you have to acknowledge that no one communication channel is adequate. I am sure that some on Facebook have no interest on an email list. Probably it would be a good idea to advertise a hashtag for Twitter and other services and SLAS would do well to promote the several channels and ensure important messages reach all of them. There is really little cost or effort with any of these. On Fri, Aug 21, 2015 at 5:43 AM, Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote:

I'd like point out that as soon as we provide and promote multiple places to post material intended for our group, members will miss some posted messages because they failed to, or couldn't, look in all the possible places messages might come from instead of in the one place they know where messages will be delivered - Utah-Astronomy. In this case we have added SLAS Talk on Facebook to the usual channel of UA. I suppose the draw is Facebook is easier to post to than UA and will allow images, but when we add Twitter, and then ... Well, you get the idea. Just my 2 cents, Ed Stimpson

The two sites serve two different purposes. Utah Astronomy is a bit more private, and a bit more focused. I believe closing Utah Astronomy would be a mis-step. Please leave it as it is. Thoughts? patrick On 20 Aug 2015, at 21:44, Siegfried Jachmann <siegfried@jachmann.org> wrote:
I posted a picture of two of them on SLAStalk. The long bridge didn't come out good enough. On Aug 20, 2015 9:33 PM, "Wiggins Patrick" <paw@digis.net> wrote:
Thanks for the heads up John. I had a look late this afternoon. I think that's the first time I've seen three huge prominences so close together and taking up a quarter of the entire limb. On 20 Aug 2015, at 11:25, John M. Craig <jmcraig@xmission.com> wrote:
Hi Folks,
Although the smoke's pretty obvious here in N Utah, H-a light comes through with remarkable clarity. There's some pretty great prominences today. If you have the gear and the daylight time, enjoy!
If you'd like to have a look through my scope (I'm in Orem), you can contact me off the list.
Ciao,
John
