I just saw something cool and quite bright headed south from my house in Sandy. Meteor? Anyone else see it? I have a photo of it! I caught it in the same frame as the ISS which was passing overhead just then. I'll upload in a few minutes. I just wanted to check with the group in case I'm going to be rich and famous. Dion

Here is a link to the image on Flickr. It looks like my shutter closed before the meteor was done. http://www.flickr.com/photos/22632727@N07/7730914778/ I went out to watch the second ISS pass of the night, through the big dipper, and saw a huge Iridium flare - so bright it caught my attention from straight overhead. Joe - It's hard to say. I suppose so, inasmuch as this guy was headed south and Perseus is in the north... Hopefully there are more where this came from. Hi, i was at the star party at tooele and just happened to catch the very bright meteor. Almost looked like a fire ball. It was just south and a little bit east of tooele. Very very bright. I might have seen the same one, if your post was made shortly after seeing it. The one I saw (from East Millcreek) was moving from north to south, and a bit west of me. Extremely bright, it traversed almost the entire visible sky, and was _fast_. Perseids are known to be fast meteors, something along the lines of 100,000 mph. Dion, First - that's a great photo. I don't think we saw the same meteor. The one I saw covered about 90 degrees of the sky, very high, maybe 60 -70 degrees above my western horizon, and looked to be going from north to south, like it was following a line of longitude. It might have been closer to 9:45 PM. This thing was _bright_, close to what I'd be tempted to call a fireball. What was really memorable about it was how much of the sky it covered and its tremendous speed. During a star party I provided for a girls camp last night (near Wolf Creek), we all saw many, bright meteors with several leaving long trails. These were generally radiating from the direction of Perseus, so they were early members of the Perseid meteor shower which peaks on Saturday/Sunday. If at all possible, get out of town and enjoy the shower! I saw it from the hills South of Heber where I was doing a star party for a girl's camp. It was very bright, and at the end looked like a falling firework. 9:30-ish. Glad to see confirmation on this list! /R ----- Original Message ----- From: Dion Davidson <diondavidson@yahoo.com> To: "Utah-Astronomy@mailman.xmission.com" <Utah-Astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Cc: Sent: Monday, August 6, 2012 9:36 PM Subject: [Utah-astronomy] bright meteor?
