Headed into SLC last evening the sunset colors on Antelope Island and the background made for a very nice site. Really nice the way the distant mountains punched up into the clouds. Of course I'd forgotten to bring my camera so all I got were a couple of iPhone shots. http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/temp/antelopeisland.jpg patrick p.s. Too bad. Next time. I'm aways looking for folks to come along. Usually no charge. And whoever is with me has the option of doing some of the flying. Anyone else up for a flight this afternoon? Three seats available (though total weight in all three can not exceed 300 pounds). patrick On 01 Feb 2013, at 02:25, Howard Jackman wrote:

Do not know if anyone looked to the West Wed night (after sunset). The clouds were very dark, but there was a series of horizontal openings and the fading western sky showed through. Did not know what to call it, so I called it cloudset, as no sun rays were visible. Called Dan & he could see it also. Was just an interesting contrast to your pictures, Patrick. BTW, install an interrupter gear and affix a Hero, or such, and take pictures while you a flying! I know, that is a reach. 73 On 2/1/2013 1:27 AM, Patrick Wiggins wrote:

I tried again this evening but I pretty much figured that without the clouds the scene would not look as dramatic. Especially without those many openings you mentioned. And it didn't help that right about sunset every student flyer in the area was headed back to SLC and I didn't want to risk getting in their way so didn't go as far north as I'd of liked. I may try again Sunday as there are supposed to be some clouds by then (about the only time clouds at sunset are any good <g> ). http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/temp/AI02FEB.JPG Earlier in the afternoon I got this shot of Little Sahara down by Delta. I liked the way the low-in-the-sky Sun cast blue shadows over the snow covered dunes. I may submit it to EPOD. http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/temp/LITTLESAHARA.JPG After leaving there I headed north for the Antelope Island shot and noticed some fun shadows on the installation south of Stockton where they are destroying chemical munitions. I was trying to get it where all of the buildings were casting long, pointy shadows but a hill in the west started blocking the Sun so I had to settle for this. Plus loitering over that particular facility tends to be frowned upon... http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/temp/EOD.JPG Ok, time to go shoot Comet ISON. patrick On 01 Feb 2013, at 15:04, Larry Holmes wrote:

I really like that little Sahara shot Patrick, I'll second the notion to submit it to EPOD, some cool shadows from those bunkers at the Stockton facility, too bad they were cut in half by the larger shadow. Thanks Howard. I have not given up on the Stockton site. I'm just going to have to wait until the Sun has moved horizontally a bit so as to clear the peak in the west. I just need to get the Sun a bit lower so the peaks of the shadows are touching the buildings. patrick On 01 Feb 2013, at 22:33, Howard Jackman wrote:

Patrick, I had thought that they finished destroying the chemical stockpile a year or two ago, and were in the process of de-commissioning the facility. Is it still up and running? On Fri, Feb 1, 2013 at 9:50 PM, Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com>wrote:

I believe that was only the mustard gas. They have decades of work ahead of them.

Hi Chuck, Like Brent said, it's nearly history. But reading through this I see they are building two more similar facilities elsewhere. One in Colorado. Seems kind of silly to build a whole new plant so close rather than just bring the stuff here for destruction at our existing facility which has proven it can do the job. http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/news/53347170-78/weapons-chemical-says-depot.ht... patrick On 02 Feb 2013, at 09:40, Chuck Hards wrote:

Yeah, I like the note on the sectional reading "Notice For reasons of national security pilots are requested to avoid fight at and below 8000 MSL in this area." For the record, I was a 8500. I stayed high not wanting to experience what this guy did flying his glider over a power plant: http://www.aopa.org/aircraft/articles/2013/130110secret-no-fly-zone.html

I try to get up at least twice a week and log at least 4 hours a week. But with the recent weather I was not able to fly at all last month until the last day of the month. And you? patrick
I am lucky to get up twice per month. I used to get 150 hours per year, but not any longer. 100LL is too expensive. ________________________________ From: Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Saturday, February 2, 2013 4:58 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Antelope Island sunset (redo) On 02 Feb 2013, at 13:46, Brent Watson wrote:
