ATM session report and next month's planned date/time
Just a quick report on the July 9th ATM session at the Hutchings' optical shop (my garage): Craig and Mark attended and both were able to try "pushing glass" on my current 8" project. With their help, that mirror progressed through 320 grit, then 500, on to 12 micron and then just after the session, I finished up with 5 micron. It is now ready to be polished. Those of you who have made mirrors, know that now, the real work begins! I may keep this mirror like it is for now and work it only during the ATM sessions, so that attendees who have not worked a mirror can try it out. Any of you who are curious about making mirrors, don't be shy about working this one with me. Short of dropping the thing on the concrete, there is virtually nothing that you can do that will permanently harm the project. Next session there will likely be people working on dew zappers and I will continuing work on the 8". As usual, any other projects that any of you might want to bring and work on are welcome. The next session will be on August 13th from 9:00 to noon. I can easily go longer if any of you want to keep working your projects. Mat
I am bringing my dew heater stuff and also the components for a hybrid Catsperch/Denver Chair I want to make. If it is okay with Matt I'll be bringing my 14 inch mirror by, he knows what that is for. If I have time this Saturday I may play with making a few dew heater strips myself. Alas, a mirror will break when dropped on cement as my 18 year old daughter will attest. Oh well, it is just glass . . . and I do have one more blank. So much too do, so little time. On Tue, Jul 12, 2011 at 4:46 PM, Hutchings, Mat (H USA) < mat.hutchings@siemens.com> wrote:

Matt, Can you remind us shortly before the session, and tell us what to bring? I want to work on a dew zapper. Joe; I will absolutely send out a reminder a week or so before the next session. As far as telling you what to bring, see my message from a few days ago: I have soldering irons and plenty of solder, but you should bring all other supplies (resistors, wire, etc.) you may need. The following link that Jay previously sent is a very good resource: http://www.dewbuster.com/heaters/heaters.html This site should tell you what value resistors you will need to obtain. You should be able to get the resistors from Radio Shack, or any other electronics parts house. I'm sorry I cannot give you more details than that, this is because I don't know what physical size dew zapper you need, or how many individual zappers (objective, eyepiece, finder, etc.) you want. If the website does not help you, let me know and we'll figure it out together. I would like to thank Mat for hosting these -- we were both new to this and he was very patient in explaining, showing, and letting us try it out. I intended to only stay a short while but enjoyed it so much he had a hard time getting rid of me. -----Original Message----- From: utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Hutchings, Mat (H USA) Sent: Tuesday, July 12, 2011 4:47 PM To: Utah Astronomy Subject: [Utah-astronomy] ATM session report and next month's planne ddate/time Just a quick report on the July 9th ATM session at the Hutchings' optical shop (my garage): Craig and Mark attended and both were able to try "pushing glass" on my current 8" project.
