Celestron Orange 8" on ksl.com for months and months
Hello All, I have seen this telescope on ksl.com since last January at least. http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=218&ad=12841339&cat=&lpid=1&search=celestro... I would bet the guy would deal. He just keeps relisting it and dropping the price. I don't need another scope, but I keep thinking it could probably be had for less than the listing. Steve

Only if the optics are good. Some were made during the Halley's Comet era with bad optics. The best optics I have seen are in the newer scopes after around 1998. Ah yes. I see it now. And, you could contact the seller and ask to take a look at it in the evening. Look at some stars with it. Actually give it a run for its money and see if it's worth it. ++++++++++++++++++ Troy Davidson, KF7MTE www.istroyworking.com On Wed, Jun 1, 2011 at 3:17 PM, Kim Hyatt <kimharch@cut.net> wrote:

I just rang the guy and learned that the crack is in the tripod not the mount. In addition to the stuff he noted in the add as being missing it's also missing the case and manual. He said he inherited the scope and that the $415 price is negotiable. patrick
I might be wrong also but as I remember the old C8's had a weak spot where the tripod leg mounted to the hub. When He said leg and crack in the same sentence that was my first thought. He did make it seem like more of a leg issue than a fork issue to me. I also thought I saw the "Moss" but realized in a minute that it was a reflection of a tree. Steve

Do ya'll know if a focal reducer would work visually for a wider field with a scope such as this C8? Can something like this work for a finder for a monster Dob? Sure, but as has been noted, it might be too heavy unless the Dob is truly monstrous. patrick
Thanks Patrick. I wonder if the wider fields are worth it. Yeah, I was thinking REALLY big Dob, on the scale of the scope that's supposed to be at ALCON this year. (Is it still coming and what size is it?) So OK, it wasn't very funny after all. I'm reminded of the finder scope used on the 24-inch Clark at Lowell Observatory. If I remember, it was a 12-inch Clark and just as enjoyable to use as the larger scope. In fact, I did my Mars sketches from there with the 12-inch, not the 24-inch. I've got a couple of them. You'd be welcome to borrow one to see how it works for you. Just let me know when you'll be in the area. Alternately I'll be speaking at Bryce the evening of Wednesday the 29th so I could get it to you there. patrick
Celestron's f/6.3 focal reducer can be used visually and Denkmeier makes a great .5 focal reducer making the C-8 a very well corrected wide field f/5 scope. I have the later and it works great on my Ultima 2000.
