Curiosity detects "bright object" in Martian soil
http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/694811main_pia16225-43_full.jpg I enlarged the image and it sure likes like a pin or bolt sticking up out of the soil. When they were building this thing, I hope NASA didn't send someone to Harbor Frieght for Chinese cotter pins...
I can't see it unless it's just a bright spot where parts of the machinery don't happen to block the sunlight. -- Joe ________________________________ From: Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 9, 2012 6:38 AM Subject: [Utah-astronomy] Curiosity detects "bright object" in Martian soil http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/694811main_pia16225-43_full.jpg I enlarged the image and it sure likes like a pin or bolt sticking up out of the soil. It's very small, and near the bottom of the frame, Joe. On Tue, Oct 9, 2012 at 7:25 AM, Joe Bauman <josephmbauman@yahoo.com> wrote:

I'm sure they'll try and ID it photographically, from different angles if needed, before they zap it with the laser. One clear picture will tell them if it's a piece of the rover that fell-off. The conspiracy people are probably already posting on-line. "It's a piece of Megatron" or somesuch tripe. On Tue, Oct 9, 2012 at 7:37 AM, william baker <baker464b@yahoo.com> wrote:

Joe, for a typical computer screen, look at the bottom of the picture, about an inch up from the bottom of the frame, approximately midway between the portions of the lander on either side of the soil. On Tue, Oct 9, 2012 at 7:45 AM, Joe Bauman <josephmbauman@yahoo.com> wrote:

Look at the arm on the right side of the picture where there are two bolts holding some sort of a bracket. Now notice the 2nd bolt down from the top, looking slightly left of this bracket you should see something that looks metallic in the soil. Hope this helps. ________________________________ From: Joe Bauman <josephmbauman@yahoo.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 9, 2012 7:45 AM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Curiosity detects "bright object" in Martian soil Bill, can you tell me approximately where in the picture you're looking? Well, we've been raining junk down on that planet for 40 years now. Each lander attempt comes appart in more pieces than a pinata. And that's just the stuff we spew out on purpose. It will be even worse when the announcement is made about the "discovery of life on Mars". Having worked in a clean room environment before I'm aware of how hard it is to have people maintain discipline. The recent outbreak of menningitis is a good example. I forsee the first found martian life will look just like human rhinovirus. Because someone was too lazy to cover his nose with a mask. DT
