Tooele Valley Temple
It looks like the new LDS temple is going to be fairly close to SPOC. I know the church lights these up at night. Wondering if this has been on the radar of any SLAS officers? Time to think about moving the observatory. Too bad a club dark sky site was shot down every time it was every brought up, going back decades.
Noticed the announcement and googled the location. Erda is substantially south of SPOC by a number of miles. Yes it will be well-lit at night, but considering the distance (as the crow flies) it might not seriously impact SPOC. There is already a substantial light bump from Tooele. But yes, light pollution in the area will only continue to grow. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chuck Hards" <chuck.hards@gmail.com> To: "Utah Astronomy" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Wednesday, September 25, 2019 12:05:13 PM Subject: [Utah-astronomy] Tooele Valley Temple It looks like the new LDS temple is going to be fairly close to SPOC. Fifteen years ago, Eric and I saw NGC 7000 with the naked-eye clearly from SPOC. That feat is not possible from there, anymore. As an outreach facility, SPOC has lots of life left, but I think that we are looking at about the last useful decade in that location. Might be a good idea to put a moratorium on any new construction there, save the new scopes for a better location. The club can put together a nice fund for the move, in the next ten years, but only with resolve from the board and membership. I'd hate to see it die before I do. Unfortunately, there’s more ego that astronomy going on at SPOC. I tried to warn them when West Nile virus was discovered in their pond. Sent from my iPhone

Larry, I did as you asked. You are replying to a conversation on the Utah Astronomy list that Chuck operates, not my email list. If it offends you so much to see my comments, you should request that Chuck remove you from his list. I’m certainly not going to censor myself on your behalf. — Joe Sent from my iPhone
