To everyone on this list: My employer is shutting down for two weeks, and I have been laid-off. Temporarily, I hope, but I must look for employment elsewhere just in case. Many of you know that Companion has been on the skids for some time. We have many contracts waiting to be signed, but the recession, combined with the tragedy of Sept. 11th has delayed many of our customers intended programs, to our detriment. The big tube for SPOC-2 is being completed today, and it will not be affected at all by this shut-down. I must unsubscribe for a while, and while you can still reach me at chuckhards@yahoo.com , I have cancelled ISP service at home as part of an ecconomizing strategy. I will only be checking that account once or twice a week. I would appreciate it if someone would notify me when the swap-meet is scheduled; many of you have my phone number. Thanks to all of you for your friendship, fellowship, advice, critiques, and compliments. I will miss this forum, but hopefully will see you all under the stars soon. Now, Cynthia, if I could impose on you one last time, please unsubscribe me...I've only got a little time to clean up a lot of email business! Sincerely, regretfully, Chuck Hards

Hi all, I easily found the new comet Friday night with binoculars; it looked terrific in my 6-inch newt, definitely worth a look should we get a break any time this week in the weather. Rich, I agree - excellent comet with nice tail. Visible from city, but worth getting away from the lights. Close to western horizon, so important to get away from anything that obstructs the western views. Hi all, I seem to be pretty clumsy about knocking my old Criterion Dynascope around during transport, and as you can see from the pic [see the link below], I keep breaking off the knobs on my finder scope adjustment screws. I like these big knobs (except for the fact that they seem to be made of "potmetal"), but can't seem to find them in any of the local hardware stores. Any of you know where I can find some replacements like the ones in the picture (not the one on top)? (Can you believe how beat up this poor old finderscope looks?! That digitial camera works too well... ;-) Anyway, here's the pic: http://jove.prohosting.com/~uvaa/rich/6x30FinderCloseup.jpg Thanks, Rich __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Hi Rich, Actually I've converted the screws in all of my finders to use the type shown in the top of your picture. However, while I don't know of any screws exactly like what you are looking for, I have seen and used large plastic heads that are pressed on the heads of allen head bolts. The heads are flat on top and have a serrated edge. Would something like that work? Patrick Richard Tenney wrote:

Fred Meyer carries bolts with plastic knobs, if it's a common English thread you may be in luck; if not try Bolt & Nut Supply Co 6987 S 300 West MIDVALE UT 84047-1050 (801) 566-7733
Richard, The closest knobs I've seen is at Lowe's. They have a plastic head with four "wings" to tighten them up with. What's the length and thread size and I'll be on the lookout for some other types 'cuz I'm in scrouging mode lately. Side note: what kind of digital camera are you using. The picture does look great. Gary, Thanks for the advice; I'll be sure to check out Lowes. I can't say without removing one of the screws what the thread count/size is, but I'll try to find out soon. Meanwhile, the camera is a Kodak DC3400; somewhat limited features, but one of the best at rendering excellent colors I've seen on the market. At 2 megapixels, it's certainly enough detail for what I use it for. I used the special "close-up" setting for this particular shot, and scaled down the file size by cropping and then adjusting the jpg compression using Paint Shop Pro (the poor man's Adobe Photoshop). I thought the image still showed pretty good detail at only 56K file size... Rich --- Gary Liptrot <n7zi@attbi.com> wrote:
