A few days ago I did a fun telephone interview with a reporter from a rural Utah paper about this week's partial lunar eclipse saying how it will be easily visible from all over the west. Towards the end of the interview I mentioned the 2012 eclipse and that it will be best seen from Kanarraville and that thousands may travel there to see it. So now I'm reading online where the piece got picked up by the AP and someone managed to mix up the two eclipses and now the AP story has me saying folks will be traveling from all over to see this week's eclipse from Kanarraville! Very embarrassing. Where is ace reporter Joe Bauman when you need him for accuracy...? Groan, patrick p.s. Joe, do you know who I might contact at AP to ask they issue a correction? I've already left voice mails for the reporter and her editor and am about to email clarifications to all Utah media.
Hi Patrick, Just got the note. If you call AP in SLC, a great reporter for them whom I know is Jennifer Dobner. The number should be easily available, but if not, I'll try to dig it up. Thanks for the suggestion. I could not find Ms. Dobner's contact info but I did call the SLC office and was delighted to have a real live person answer. I explained the situation and he said he'd talk with the night supervisor about getting out a corrected story. He even called back a few minutes later to get corrected wording. So now I just hope it goes out soon enough to keep other outlets from running the old version. And now I'm going to go finish my laundry... :) patrick
That's great, Patrick. I guess Jennifer wasn't working tonight. I know she covered the execution of Gardner, so I hope they gave her extra time off to recuperate. And maybe she doesn't work on Sundays anyway. I'm glad it is getting straightened out. LOL! But if I'd done it a few minutes ago I probably would have shredded everything as I put it in the washer. :)

Thanks. I'm just really grateful to the guy I spoke with at the AP. I spoke with him at 11:55 and he just emailed me saying the corrected story went out at 12:09. Now I just have to hope that everyone who ran the original story will see the corrected version and run it. patrick (some calmer now)
The Deseret News ran Patrick's press release, which of course was accurate. The Trib ran the inaccurate AP story. Hope they have the moxie to run a correction that points out Patrick is NOT to blame for the error (and that gets his title right). -- Joe, whose heart is still with the DN. --- On Mon, 6/21/10, Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com> wrote: From: Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com> Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Augh To: "Utah Astronomy" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Date: Monday, June 21, 2010, 12:40 AM On 21 Jun 2010, at 00:28, Josephine Grahn wrote:

Happily I just heard from the Trib's Sheena McFarland (she's also a subscriber here and an excellent science writer). I hasten to add that Sheena did not write the inaccurate piece in the Tribune, they just ran the wire story (I see the Trib has corrected their online piece). Sheena, however, is writing a story of her own that will run before eclipse day. BTW (Joe will relate to this), I received an email from the reporter that wrote the story that the AP went with. She apologized all over the place but noted that the story she wrote was accurate but that an editor changed things around. I'm sure that NEVER happened to Joe... :) patrick P.S. Nothing to do with astronomy but since we're talking newspapers I thought I'd throw in a funny headline I saw today. It seems the guy who may be taking over the oil mess at BP is named Bob Dudley. The headline read "Will Dudley Do Right". (Apologies to those not old enough to catch the pun.)
Oh no, that NEVER happened to me. (Especially not when I did a story about Gov. Huntsman visiting the scene of flooding -- and the lede got so screwed up by a certain editor that it was incomprehensible babble. And yes, that's how we spell lede.) Well the good news is that with the trend in printed media it probably was only read by a very few number of people. I get the tribune and I missed the story, the newspaper is not my source of Astronomical News.
