Directions to Wedge Overlook
I've been contacted by a couple of people of how to get to the Wedge Overlook for the 9th and 10th of April. I have given them the map http://slas.us/images/maps/WEDGECEDARMTN.jpg at SLAS but I don't have set directions. Anyone here provide that? My son turns 16 on the 8th, and were celebrating during the day on Saturday so I won't be going to the Wedge, just staying local at either Pit n Pole or Lakeside if weather permits.
The most difficult part of the trip is finding the turn off on Rt 10. There is a sign there but it is very easy to miss at 65 MPH. Does any one remember what the sign says? Otherwise the map you have is quite accurate and the Overlook is actually easy to find, in fact if you go to far you know when go over the cliff. The best way I know of to get to the Wedge, is to travel south on highway 10 to a point just north of the town of Castledale. At that point the road will be going south but you can see a 90 degree turn to the right as the highway approaches Castledale. You will see a road on the left and a sign that says San Rafael Swell. Take this road and follow the signs to the Wedge. It is pretty easy to find. There is a road that leads there that leaves highway 10 just south of Huntington. This road goes through the town of Lawrence but I don't think it is in as good shape as the one nearer to Castledale and it is also longer off the highway. It's paved for only a couple of miles out of Castle Dale, but from then on it's a heavily graded dirt road -- no problem for any car. In the old days, it went through sandy washes and sometimes you'd be in danger of getting stuck, but there's been a hideous amount of roadwork there. -- Joe ________________________________ From: Craig Smith <cs2560@gmail.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Thu, April 1, 2010 8:54:28 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Directions to Wedge Overlook Is the road paved all the way there or dirt/gravel? -----Original Message----- From: utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Rodger C.
Thanks Rodger Fry

The most difficult part of the trip is finding the turn off on Rt 10. There is a sign there but it is very easy to miss at 65 MPH. Does any one remember what the sign says? Otherwise the map you have is quite accurate and the Overlook is actually easy to find, in fact if you go to far you know when go over the cliff.

I've been contacted by a couple of people of how to get to the Wedge Overlook for the 9th and 10th of April. I have given them the map http://slas.us/images/maps/WEDGECEDARMTN.jpg at SLAS but I don't have set directions. Anyone here provide that? My son turns 16 on the 8th, and were celebrating during the day on Saturday so I won't be going to the Wedge, just staying local at either Pit n Pole or Lakeside if weather permits.

... in which I admit I was wrong to take a purist approach to astrophotography -- here 'tis: http://www.deseretnews.com/blog/47/10008839/Nightly-News-Astronomy-blog-Mani... Thanks, Joe
Joe, interesting blog, as usual. Just one nit to pick. I object to your use of the term "cosmic reality". No matter what or how you capture, manipulate, or display an image, it is still a vague representation of the object, meaningful to humans only, and a mere shadow- ghost, if you will, of the actual object. The part of the vast electromagnetic spectrum we image in this hobby is insignificant. Further, since Dark Matter and Dark Energy- outside of the electromagnetic spectrum we can currently capture and manipulate- make up the vast majority of the substance of the universe, and you image none of it, it distances our quaint little images even further from "cosmic reality". Our images are tiny windows that let us see a caricature, a representation for human eyes, that is a mere outline of the true nature of the object. If you want to define cosmic reality as having an anthropocentric component, then maybe I can swallow it for the sake of argument only. We ourselves are mere wisps in space-time, as far as having any substance at all. And if you subscribe to a religious philosophy, you can argue further that the material world is far from the reality of what is truly important, the immortality of the soul. You can't image a soul- just it's tenous anchor in space-time. Images are always art, and in art, anything goes. Please yourself; you are the only critic who's opinion really matters. Very good comment, Chuck! Why not put it on the blog too, because it deserves to be seen by folks beyond the UA list. I agree, and I think I was using the term a bit frivolously. Joe, my post is too long (winded, lol) to fit into the comment box. I'll try to pare it down, though, and post the gist of it, as time permits. Thanks! On Mon, Apr 5, 2010 at 11:09 AM, Joe Bauman <josephmbauman@yahoo.com> wrote:

I always go via the road just outside Castle Dale. If you were to drive into Castle Dale, to the 7-11 (I think it still is) and then go back on the highway, it's about 2 miles from the store. At that point, you turn right. -- Joe ________________________________ From: Robert Taylor <Rob.Taylor@digis.net> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Thu, April 1, 2010 5:53:57 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Directions to Wedge Overlook The most difficult part of the trip is finding the turn off on Rt 10.
