I'm looking for a good solution to keep my dobsonian safe out in the elements. I am wanting to leave my dobsonian out on the deck at my house. When the scope is not in use, it will be about 6' under the eves. The area where I want to set it will be safe from rain except when the rain comes in sideways. I am thinking that a large tarp that is tied down will be ok, but I want to hear what others have to say. Thanks. ++++++++++++++++++ Troy Davidson
About 20 years ago I had Kirkhams fabricate a custom cover for my scope. A bit pricey, but the workmanship and fit were great and I still use it. A bit more protective and elegant than a tarp.

Troy,
I also have had Kirkhams make custom covers for me. They do have a wide variety of materials, however, it was back when nobody they could not be found commercially. Google reveals many sources, below is AstroSystems they claim their covers allow condensation to escape. The covers I had made were of neopren, they where very durable but I did not store my telescope outside. The cost of the AstroSystems seems competative with Kirkhams from 20 years ago. http://www.astrosystems.biz/covers.htm Erik About 20 years ago I had Kirkhams fabricate a custom cover for my scope. A

You have to be careful about long term storage under a tarp outside since moisture can build under the tarp and cause damage to the equipment. I have noticed this happening in just a few days when I have stored my scope outside. -----Original Message----- From: utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Troy Davidson Sent: Monday, June 01, 2009 4:58 PM To: Utah Astronomy Subject: [Utah-astronomy] Dobsonian Cover? That's my fear. Is there a way, besides an actual structure, to store a scope outside and have it be safe from the elements? ++++++++++++++++++ Troy Davidson On Tue, Jun 2, 2009 at 7:50 AM, Don J. Colton <djcolton@piol.com> wrote:

Some people have used a 40 watt light bulb to heat the inside under the tarp but then the bulb might burn out. I am not sure of a good solution. -----Original Message----- From: utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Troy Davidson Sent: Tuesday, June 02, 2009 8:13 AM To: Utah Astronomy Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Dobsonian Cover?
