Re: [Utah-astronomy] Report on disassembly and cleaning a GM8
One of the best service to the community I have ever seen on the web was a Greek imager who posted a video (65Mb) showing his dissembly, greasing and reassembly of a Synta EQ6 mount. A picture may be worth a thousand words, but on these "how to" things, a video is worth a thousand pictures. Way to go, Jim. Tackling a mount disassembly shows some guts (or atleast more than I have). - Kurt P.S. - A note on the grease. There are some kinds of grease that will turn into a solid below freezing temperature. Other kinds are made to stay viscous down to 0 deg F.
It's referred to as "snowmobile grease", or lithium grease. On Sun, Feb 8, 2009 at 4:27 PM, Canopus56 <canopus56@yahoo.com> wrote:

FWIW, the grease Software Bisque recommends for the Paramount is Lubriplate No. 105 motor assembly grease. I bought my tube at NAPA. I got the smallest tube (280 g) which is far more than I'll ever need so if anyone would like to have some just let me know and then bring a suitable container to next week's SLAS meeting. patrick On 08 Feb 2009, at 19:25, Chuck Hards wrote:

Lubriplate is good stuff. I've used it when re-assembling engines after a complete tear-down. Been around for decades. Just keep the extra around the house. It's also very good for screw-drive garage door openers. Most garages are unheated. On Sun, Feb 8, 2009 at 8:33 PM, Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com>wrote:

Kurt, Thanks for the heads-up on grease verses temperature. I got lithium grease and the container only says that it is useful over a wide range of temperatures; what ever that means. I stuck it outside in the cold and check it and it was still quite uh… viscous/ pliable? It was still greasy. To be sure I will be checking it on one of these cool mornings next time we get a chance to check out Lulin. The Goddard comment seems to vindicate Bishop's O.H. piece on white dwarf visibility in amateur scopes. It's a point nobody seemed to care about acknowledging, that is, that it's not really a white dwarf until the planetary nebula has disappeared. Interesting piece, Joe.
