This list always provides the best advice; After purchasing the #12 lense, I made a couple of phone calls and found a place that had #14s and for $1.50 apiece I bought 3 and framed them individually in some cardboard. By the time I tested them on the naked eye sunspot, it was up at about the 10:00 position on the disk. Bring on the eclipse! Joe Borgione
fron Patrick: Hi,
The difference between a 12 and a 14 is the 14 is safe for looking at the Sun while the 12 is not. I would recommend you NOT use a #12 to view the Sun.
See: http://www.mreclipse.com/Totality/TotalityCh11.html#Welder Patrick :-)
From Brent:
Joe, I have used #12 before, and without any noticable effect. I only used them for VERY short periods of time. I DO NOT RECOMEND USING THEM. I have purchased #14 glass from the welding supply shops around town (US Welding, Gas House, etc.) You would do much better with the #14.
Joe, WHERE did you buy these? Locally? For the $1.50 price each??? Thanks, Jim Stitley --- Joe Borgione <jborgion@xmission.com> wrote:

Jim, et al- I purchased 2" x 4" #14 welders glass from Norco, a welding supply company in Salt Lake City. They are located at 2006 West, 1500 South, just south of the Sap Brothers truck stop at I-215 & California Ave. When I was there (friday, 5/31) they had a couple dozen in stock. Does anyone know if the glass ever comes in a larger size? I thought I had seen welder's masks with a larger faceplate than the 2x4. -Rich --- Joe Borgione <jborgion@xmission.com> wrote:

Try searching the Grainger site. I tried, but my browser won't support it, and they wouldn't let me in! C. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! - Official partner of 2002 FIFA World Cup http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com
Check around with other welding supply stores; Norco carries the larger size, but they were out of them at the time I went there. The size is about 4 x 5, which is the size of the #12 I bought. Joe Borgione Richard Tenney wrote:

Okay, any reason why these wouldn't make GREAT solar filters for small refractors? When a 60mm filter from Orion costs nearly $60... thoughts anyone? -Rich --- Joe Borgione <jborgion@xmission.com> wrote:

I would be concerned about the amount of energy they allow to pass. They are OK for eyes at 3-4mm aperture, but a 60mm refractor gathers 225 times more light than a 4mm eyeball, and nearly 60 times more than a constricted upil. Brent --- Richard Tenney <retenney@yahoo.com> wrote:
