Dear fellow astro-fans, I've just posting a set of photos on both the SLAS Facebook site and my section of the SLAS gallery, showing views of a trip to the rare book section of Marriott Library, University of Utah, on Jan. 30. Thanks for taking a look and thanks to Patrick for arranging this visit. Although it wasn't an official SLAS excursion, nearly all of those present were SLASers, whom Patrick kindly allowed to accompany him. If you see any errors, please tell me immediately; also, I would like to hear any comments you have. For those not using Facebook, the SLAS gallery location of the album is: http://www.slas.us/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=5517 -- Best wishes, Joe
Very interesting, Joe. I am a bit surprised that you were all allowed to handle the books with bare hands. Thanks for sharing images from that really cool experience! Hi Mat, they had extremely strict rules about washing our hands with special wipes -- twice. And we couldn't carry anything with us that could pass along soiling, such as cameras. When I took pictures I couldn't touch the books. To do that I had to put my camera away on a shelf and do the elaborate cleansing, leave my tissue under my chair and make sure my hands were dry before touching them. We all had to follow those rules. But I think the books were unharmed. After all, they were designed to be read and had been for hundreds of years, by people who weren't following any such rules. Thanks for the comment -- Joe ________________________________ From: "Hutchings, Mat" <mat.hutchings@siemens.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Thursday, February 14, 2013 8:52 AM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Rare Book Trip Very interesting, Joe.
