Some of the old-timers may remember Binopalooza at Lakeside, about ten or twelve years ago. Any interest in a repeat? If not this fall, next spring? Do any of you who attended remember moonset, when I was cranking-out Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" on the stereo? The thin crescent moon set just as the song ended, to much applause. The timing was perfect! Ah, the memories!
Not sure what "binopalooza" is, but assume it involves people stargazing, so that's good enough for me to say I'm interested. Sounds good to me; I'm new to observing and from what I understand, the best place to start is binoculars. This will be a great opportunity to give 'em a go in the company of others. Hopefully I won't have work or homework nagging for my attention when it's scheduled. :) On Sun, Oct 2, 2011 at 7:47 PM, Steve Fisher <iotacass1@hotmail.com> wrote:

"Binopalooza" was a star party at Lakeside about ten or twelve years ago, with emphasis on binocular astronomy. Of course everyone brought a telescope as well. We had a "show and tell" session before nightfall, with everyone showing off their various binocular mounts. The seeing was fantastic, we were seeing the larger spiral galaxies like photos in 70mm and larger binos. Some of us have talked about having another one, and I certainly wouldn't mind at all. With the weather expected to turn this week, perhaps next spring would be better?
Although a crisp autumn night wouldn't be bad, either, as long as one is dressed for it. If you have a nice bino mount, you can do "lounge-chair" observing and remain toasty and comfortable. This means your mount must be able to pan in azimuth without "walking around the tripod". Russ, you'll have a blast, and it is a great way to break oneself into visual astronomy. Steve, sorry but there's no "burning man" analogy with live music. We have to settle for canned tunes.
Don't give up on October! The last two years new moon in October has been Indian summer with cool evenings. Presented by Nathan's Historical Observations On Oct 3, 2011, at 6:11 AM, Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote:

For those who might be interested, the SLAS history document (http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/slas/SLASPAST.PDF) lists Binopalooza as having been held on 08 June 2002. Hard to believe it's been that long ago. patrick

I would be very interested in going to Binopalooza 2! Somehow I've never got schedules linked with others, and always gone to lakeside alone, except for one time with Michael VO who kindly introduced me to several globulars I'd never tried to hunt down before. One of my best experiences at lakeside was leaning back in a chair with a pair of 15x70s and enjoying M81 and M82. I vote for the weekend of October 22/23 or the nearest clear night to that weekend. As a 23 year old student at the U, I won't be free the next weekend, "halloween", or "attractive classmates wear skimpy outfits even though it's cold out" as the holiday is sometimes known. :) Ian On Mon, Oct 3, 2011 at 11:55 AM, Jay Eads <jayleads@gmail.com> wrote:

You're welcome. ;o)
It looks like the 28th is the only Friday this month that may work for me, as I have to be up at the crack of dawn on every other Saturday morning between now and November. Too, I'm concerned about Lakeside being a mud-hole if there is rain or snow before the event. Would having it at SPOC this fall interest anyone? We could go to a darker site in the spring for a reprise.
I have found that unless it is extremely wet, and wet the week before to the day before a trip, the west desert is usually very dry. I have observed at Lakeside up until the snow flies hard and deep in January and I observe all winter long at Pit n Pole and have never ran into mud. It's there as is evident by the mud tracks left by 4x4 and ATVers, but give it a week to dry out after a series of storms, and the main area at the Pit is dry. If Lakeside is too muddy there is always the Knolls. Five Mile Pass is closer and up higher so you avoid the humidity also out that way. One of my best nights at Pit n Pole was with Mat last year when I split Sirius first thing that evening and then later was able to capture the Horsehead/B33 with the filter. It did get cold that February night, down to -6 degrees F before we left, but we never got cold that night. Air was terrific that evening. Yeah, if it dries out for a few days beforehand, Lakeside should be ok. Should be. Cattle have pounded the dirt out there into a fine dust and after a rain, it's the stickiest clay mud in the world. Some years ago we talked about getting permission to dump a few dozen yards of gravel there, but it was way too expensive. Probably more so today since the cost of diesel has skyrocketed since then.
Oh, I do agree that when it is muddy, you don't want to be at Lakeside. One will never get out without help. I'm more concerned about clouds and weather this year. I read online we are looking at another winter like last winter but we'll see (I hope not!). On Tue, Oct 4, 2011 at 7:55 AM, Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote:

I have found that unless it is extremely wet, and wet the week before to the day before a trip, the west desert is usually very dry.

I just got handed a new schedule and I'm working 6 days a week for at least the month of October. So I'm out for this month, sorry.
