Joe, A simple pair of 7x50 binoculars would be a good start. Also, a planisphere and a red flashlight would be nice additions while under the stars. If interest continues, a simple table-top telescope like the Orion FunScope 76mm reflector that could be set up on a picnic table might fit the bill, and it's under $100! Just a thought.
