Warner Canyon, entering from Hurricane not through St. George, has a lot of promise. Many places to pull off and set up. Dave On Dec 13, 2013, at 7:09, Mike Scott <mike37n113w@gmail.com> wrote:

I used to observe at the new airport site - before it was the new airport. I have also observed from the old fort east of town, or the dino footprints east of that. I am not talking about the museum in town, I am talking about Fort Pierce, and the dino tracks farther east.. Yep, that’s Warner Valley. It’s not too bad. I’ve pulled over in various areas a few times out there. The Fort Pierce area is nice. The wieners and I go to the dinosaur track area quite a bit. However, if you don’t have a 4X4 it’s not a good idea to try to get to those areas from St. George. There’s a sand dune area near the main road on the St. George-side and the winds pick up the sand and drift it across the roadway. It can get pretty deep. I’ve pulled a lot of people out of that sand. They don’t realize it’s about 4-feet deep in places and they think they can get their cars or 2-wheel drive pickups across no problem. Well, it becomes a problem real quick. Going from the Hurricane side presents no problems. The gravel road on that side is one of those groomed gravel roads. You can go 35-45 miles an hour on that road. Much easier on your equipment, too. You don’t bounce as much as when you plow through the dunes. I think it’s 700 W that I turn on. You go around the airport and just keep going south. There’s signs along the road that say Warner Valley when you get out that far. I think they say dinosaur tracks, also, if I’m not mistaken. That may be coming from St. George, though. Here’s the dinosaur track location: http://wikimapia.org/9523589/Warner-Valley-dinosaur-tracks . It’s a big valley. Dave On [Dec 15], at [Dec 15] 11:07 AM, Mike Scott wrote:

Hi Mark - I don't have an answer for you now but in a couple of weeks I plan to take a number of night sky readings with a Sky Quality Monitor and can include Leeds - it will give you an idea of darkness. I will post the results on my redmountainobservatory blog and on our area's new stgeorgeastronomygroup website. On Sun, Dec 15, 2013 at 10:36 AM, Mark Shelton <astroshelton@yahoo.com>wrote:

There’s some nice observing areas around Leeds down near the Virgin River. What days in February? Dave On [Dec 15], at [Dec 15] 11:32 AM, Mark Shelton wrote:

One thing about the Fort Pearce site I forgot to mention. I used to go out there with OAS for our winter star party in February. We had a few problems with four-wheelers and people wanting to party. One year, 2005, it was too muddy so we set up on a flat grassy area to observe. It can get windy out there too. I recall taking my 8 inch Celestron out there one night and the wind kicked up, had trouble observing because my eyes were irratated. I also remember calling the St George Police in 2012 cause some guys were shooting rifles near the Arizona Strip. We saw tracer fire and it felt like we were in a war zone. You have to be careful out in the desert especially on the weekends. I also know of a couple of places off of highway 9. I prefer quiet and calm. Debbie - can you help me pinpoint the Fort Pierce area so I can put it on the map - along with your warnings. Any other Hwy 91 sites too - I did put the Anasazi trailhead up on the map. I was out of town and didn't read through all the emails so I don't know if Debbie shared the Virgin site with you. It is a good site if it isn't windy. Especially if you stay on the side of the hill closer to the highway so that you don't get the dam lights shining off the cliffs. http://www.blm.gov/ut/st/en/fo/st__george/more/heritage_resources/public_use... Mike, Click on the location map on this website. I'm not sure about the GPS coordinates. One good thing about this site is I found the Fornax galaxy cluster in Southern Fornax and the very faint Jones-Emberson1 in Lynx. I'd prefer a non-windy weeknight there and dry roads. Every site has it's pros and cons. The Virgin site is a good one as long as it is not windy. It is a mile past the LaVerkin Overlook turnoff going towards Zion National Park on highway 9. The carlights are not a problem because of the hump. Debbie On Mon, Dec 16, 2013 at 10:11 AM, Mike Scott <mike37n113w@gmail.com> wrote:

Are we talking about winter or summer? For winter,I like Anasazi Trailhead, Little Black Mountain Petroglyth area by the airport. I got eaten up my mosquitoes at Gunlock in the fall one year. Maybe it is better in the winter months than the warmer months. Ivins Reservoir isn't a bad site except there is no pit toilet like the Anasazi Trailhead just east of the Kayenta turnoff. I also found a spot off of highway 18 west of Dammeron Valley that I call the Upper Sand Cove Reservoir site. It was pretty dark there but it was a little chilly there at 4500 feet elevation. There was some dryed up cow dung but it did not bother anybody. Hope to go back there in February. In the summer I go north, out of the heat. Mountain Meadows isn't a bad site but if you want darker go to Enterprise Reservoir. You can also fish there if you want. I also like the Kolob Reservoir area for the summer. At 8000 feet, it is refreshing to cool down there in the summer. The Kolob Finger area is good although the north is a little light polluted from Cedar City. The St George light dome is to the southwest there. Cedar Breaks area is nice also but that is an overnight trip. I have heard that people from Cedar City set up near the radar towers in the summer months. Debbie On Sun, Dec 15, 2013 at 3:10 PM, Brent Watson <brentjwatson@yahoo.com>wrote:
