Here are some Awsome first light photos. I thought I would share in case you have not seen them http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2044840/Worlds-complex-telesc... Steve
Absolutely astonishing, Steve. I had never even heard of ALMA (sp?) before. I wonder how it stacks up against the James Webb. Pretty neat stuff eh Joe? If nothing else ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array) is open for business. Did you see this story on KSL dot com? http://www.ksl.com/index.php?sid=17546079&nid=1012 We are famous!!!!

You've probably already checked this out, but the James Webb is infrared and ALMA is radio waves. Each unique and separate --- at the moment. :) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joe Bauman" <josephmbauman@yahoo.com> To: "Utah Astronomy" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Wednesday, October 5, 2011 9:08:29 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] First Light Pictures Absolutely astonishing, Steve. I was just wondering about ability to resolve distant, early objects. ________________________________ From: "jcarman6@q.com" <jcarman6@q.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Wednesday, October 5, 2011 9:40 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] First Light Pictures You've probably already checked this out, but the James Webb is infrared and ALMA is radio waves. Different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, Joe. They aren't really in any kind of competition. Webb is IR, this is sub-millimeter (radio). They certainly could supply complementary data sets, however.
The radio universe made visible. First light was incredible. I watched the video. The time lapse was incredibly smooth. I was thrilled with the time lapse of the large and small magallanic clouds. That was so impressive. Thanks for posting Steve. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Steve Fisher" <iotacass1@hotmail.com> To: utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com Sent: Wednesday, October 5, 2011 6:35:30 PM Subject: [Utah-astronomy] First Light Pictures Here are some Awsome first light photos. At 26 seconds in if you pause it and then look when it clears, you can see two eyes, a nose, an open mouth, even an ear. It kinda of reminded me of Odo from Star Trek Deep Space Nine. An another note, a cartoon from Bad Astronomy on how they get funding for NASA missions. http://www.smbc-comics.com/?id=2389 On Wed, Oct 5, 2011 at 9:34 PM, <jcarman6@q.com> wrote:

I note that the paragraph above the first photo says it's a "combined" image. I'm assuming that the combination is in visible as well as radio waves. I wonder how much sharper the reds, oranges and yellows will be when more of the radio antennae are in operation.
