We're back! Cory and I watched the eclipse from aboard ship in the Agean, on an Astronomical Tours trip, and I got some fine photos. Will post on Monday. Best wishes to all, Joe
Sooo, how well does a telescope work on a rolling deck? Come on... Somebody had to have tried it. ;) Quoting Joe Bauman <bau@desnews.com>:

Thanks, Deb. It was a great trip in most respects. We visited many classical sites and places from the Middle Ages. But the tour pushed too hard, rousting everybody up sometimes as early as 5:30 and often keeping us going until late at night. Eclipse day was the only time everybody could just sleep in. By the time it was finished we were worn out and sick -- many people had a horrid cold, including David Levy. I was so exhausted and dehydrated, with my various body chemistry levels so jumbled, that I fainted dead away in the Athens boat terminal. Fortunately a nurse caught my head before it hit. I was out something like a minute. Unbelievably, that minute was pleasant! It was the strangest thing, like going to heaven and seeing people I missed and who missed me. When I came to a nurse from our tour was puring water on my head and using her hand to brush it away, a doctor was checking my pulse and a huge crowd was gathered around -- humiliating. Best wishes, Joe
Some things never change, Joe. My Africa and Indonesia eclipse trips were so hectic that after a few days I just stayed at the hotel and skipped some of the early morning side trips. But, as in your case, the few minutes spent standing in the Moon's shadow made it all worth while. FWIW, I put together my last two eclipse trips, so there were no early mornings and lots of time at night to watch the sky. Glad you made it back ok. I look forward to seeing the pictures. Patrick
Hey Patrick. Remember when we went "eclipsing" in LaPaz. We tried to get some sleep on the lawn in front of the air terminal and got eaten alive by the little ants. Then they herded us off to the soccer field where the big ants lived. Ha! 36 hours of nonstop fun and I've got the photos to prove it. Ah, yes. Hard to forget. I think my most painful eclipse moment was for the 1983 eclipse in Indonesia when, while setting up the scope, I fell backwards onto a cactus. Ouch! Any more eclipse stories out there? Patrick

That explains why the bats hang out at Patricks bat cave.
