50 years ago today (OT)
It's been 50 years since 27 March 1964 but I'll bet Siegfried remembers it like it was yesterday. http://www.livescience.com/44412-1964-alaska-earthquake-facts.html patrick Sent from my iPad
Did anyone else on the list attend or watch Dr. Tyson's fantastic lecture yesterday evening?
I did, I was in one of the over-flow auditoriums. I had to leave early at 8:30, so I'd appreciate follow up from those who stayed later. I have to say I really enjoyed it, but I wish it was a little more polished. I understand that he was trying to be informal and conversational, though. While I could write a whole email gushing with praise, I will just mention my main praise and criticism. Praise: A very nice point about the rise of fundamentalism and the end of the Islamic golden age to illustrate the danger we face at the potential end of the U.S. / European golden age. Criticism: Several statements lumping all 1.4 billion Muslims together as "not contributing to science." As if he'd never been to an engineering department, or know Muslim scientists, though we know he has, it was just unpolished of him. Overall, lots of chances he had to be clear and interesting were passed up to get some cheap laughs. He joked about a sick looking dog on the French bill commemorating Pasteur, but never actually mentioned rabies, stuff like that. Still very entertaining, it was like science stand-up comedy night. With the situation in Crimea/Ukraine I'm starting to wonder how much longer we are going to be able send replacement astronauts to the ISS. It's looking pretty dicey. I think we are still several years away from any new private (or government) manned launch capability to orbit. I hope we don't end up with a repeat of Skylab. Sounds like we are on schedule to have our own spacecraft for that. It was a mistake not have a replacement for the shuttle, instead we got the overly ambitious and costly Orion. I do have a hard time getting worked up over Crimea, true it probably was not 90% of the population that voted for it but nobody disputes that E Ukraine and Crimea consist of mostly ethnic Russians.

I thought he did an exceptional job in bridging humanities and science (the event was hosted by the Tanner Humanities Lecture Series). Not an easy thing to do, especially when people can be so touchy about religion, culture, history, science, society, and Pluto. He told the story of his favorite vest: the one he wears often, dark blue with suns. He bought it at the Hansen Planetarium years ago. He noticed an employee wearing it and he wanted it. The employee took it off and sold it to him. Do any of you old-timers remember that? He stated that he notices that TV shows are never listed in Mountain Time, only Eastern, Central, and Pacific time. He said we all must be great in math. He said that the US is lagging behind in science and we can't afford to. With humor he showed elevator buttons and said we still are afraid of the number 13! Funny, but scary as we realize that 1 in 8 deaths occur due to polluted air. The world is facing issues that science can solve. He spoke for 3 solid hours. Entertaining and educational. -A On Thu, Mar 27, 2014 at 5:23 PM, Larry Holmes <larry@kijoda.com> wrote:

Does anyone know if it was filmed, and if it will be broadcast and/or available for streaming? /R ________________________________ From: Ann House <ann@annhouse.org> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Thursday, March 27, 2014 6:03 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Neil deGrasse Tyson Tanner Lecture I thought he did an exceptional job in bridging humanities and science (the event was hosted by the Tanner Humanities Lecture Series). Although I missed the lecture, I thought the Deseret News coverage hit at more important points than the Trib's. The DN led with the problems posed by religious fundamentalism while the Trib didn't even mention it. -- Joe On Thursday, March 27, 2014 8:48 PM, Richard Tenney <retenney@yahoo.com> wrote: Does anyone know if it was filmed, and if it will be broadcast and/or available for streaming? /R ________________________________ From: Ann House <ann@annhouse.org> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Thursday, March 27, 2014 6:03 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Neil deGrasse Tyson Tanner Lecture I thought he did an exceptional job in bridging humanities and science (the event was hosted by the Tanner Humanities Lecture Series).
