So I've been itching for a night out. Weather maps all looked like it might be 'clear enough' for me and I went for it. Wasn't the best seeing, but it wasn't the worst. Some parts of the sky were particularly clear. They've recently graded the road, so it's not bumpy at all. I arrived around 10 and got lots of viewing time in. After my third coyote visitor though, I decided to call it a night. I've never had that many come so close. The second one was probably about 20 ft away when I heard him moving around in the grass. The other two were a little farther. I spotlighted the second one with my flashlight and tried to hold him still while I got the camera lined up, trying to put him in a picture with Canis Major (THAT would've been ever so cool), but he bailed before I got it ready. Then I saw another one on the median of the highway just after I headed out around 12:30 am. -- Chrismo I fix things, all kinds of things... (801) 897-9075

Ya, that was at Lakeside. I'm used to hearing them howling from far away, but I've never seen them come that close before. I was a little too freaked to hang out. Good times tho, looking forward to slightly warmer weather! On Wed, Mar 28, 2012 at 1:46 PM, Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote:

I have not. I do know of a turnout on I70 at the big cut west of Green River that I says something like, "Wolf Viewing Area". I've never stopped to see what that's about. I think that wolves were reintroduced in extreme south Utah/north Arizona some time ago. There are some reports that members of the Yellowstone pack have migrated to northern Utah but I am pretty skeptical about them. ________________________________ From: "erikhansen@thebluezone.net" <erikhansen@thebluezone.net> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Wednesday, March 28, 2012 3:05 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Lakeside tonight, sorta worth it

There are some reports that members of the Yellowstone pack have migrated to northern Utah but I am pretty skeptical about them. My family has a cattle ranch about 20 miles north of Idaho Falls. They have had problems with Wolves on the ranch a few years back, and have told me that the wolves are moving south all the time. So they could be in Northern Utah by now. I saw Idaho wasted no time putting a bounty on them once Salazar took them off the endangered list. The story I have heard is no confirmed reports in Utah, for sure no breeding pairs. Wolves get blamed for a lot, ranchers got reimbursed for "wolf" kills. Idaho reported about 1 cow kill per wolf per year.
Saw a report wolves have been blamed for cutting deer populations in half. Checked out Yellowstone's site about park wolves, they do not kill the numbers it would take to do that and they rarely take the breeding population, humans do that. Yellowstone wolves are closely monitored and the wolf packs territory pretty well known. I am very skeptical, wolves have always been scape goated. Erik, that is because the only things wolves like better than sheep, are goats! 73, lh I am very skeptical, wolves have always been scape goated.
Hi, Continuing on with the story of the problems that cattle ranchers have with wolves. My family's summer cattle range is in the middle of Island Park Idaho. South and a little bit west of Yellowstone Park. They have about 100,000 Acres of land for the summer range. This has been in the family for generations. And they have had there run in with tree huggers and environmental activists wich is a hole other issue. To make a long story short. My family does loose cattle to wolves, but the bigest problem is Bears. The bears kill the cattle and then drag off the beef so you can not find it. The beef then gets buried by the bear for latter consumption. So to get reimbursed....... for your loss you have to produce a cattle carcass. Which is impossible from a bear kill................... because you never see it again. My family does loose some cattle every year. I do go into the mountains and dessert all summer and have had some problems with rabbit hunters. Nothing a 10 million candle spot light will not solve. You can light them up from a long way off and most of the time they head the other way. Of course your Night Vision is worthless for quite a while after that. Oh, sure. Hogle Zoo has several. I see them every few years, thankfully through a chain-link fence. BTW, did you know that even "big cats" are affected by catnip? I've been fighting the urge to toss a handful into the Bengal Tiger cage for some years now. The only thing that stops me is that I don't want to be the subject of a KSL news story.
I usually hear the ice cubes in their highball clink before they get too close. In all seriousness, does anyone worry about being at some of these remote sites alone at night? Several years ago I was out near Lakeside in a spot I like and was disturbed by some guys in the back of a pickup racing around shooting holes in the mountain. My Marine Corps experience allowed me to know what a bullet sounds like when it passes near by. It was a very, very unpleasant evening. I did not return until I had my carry conceal permit and now, I never go out to any remote site unarmed. While that may upset some of my more liberal friends I can assure you I am "probably" not packing at SPOC. Steve

I usually hear the ice cubes in their highball clink before they get too close.
In all seriousness, does anyone worry about being at some of these remote sites alone at night? I know enough target shooting goes on near the pit that I might be nervous...

I'm always out in the Utah wilds alone and only had trouble a couple of times. Nothing very serious. -- Joe ________________________________ From: Chrismo <djchrismo@gmail.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Wednesday, March 28, 2012 3:56 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Lakeside tonight, sorta worth it I've often said that if I were going out with a $10,000 telescope, I'd also be carrying a $900 handgun. I, too have been in Rush Valley (aka Pit-'n-Pole) and been concerned about gunfire during the night. I've only heard .22 fire, but it was very disconcerting. That's one of the reasons I stopped going there, even before I moved from SLC. I always carry a small .22 revolver, mostly to make noise if I think there may be wild animals nearby, but I'm thinking about getting a more serious equalizer to have on hand, say 40 caliber. I remember Dave Bernson telling me once about having to keep an eye on a cougar one night while observing, but I don't recall where he said that occurred. Bernson also had a problem with a drunken crowd at Little Mountain, a death a few weeks later led to the locked gate there. I have seen many Cougars and Coyotes no Wolves.
