I believe we can see that here. I was out near Jericho, Ut last summer and saw the galactic center...at least I think it was the galactic center. :D On Wed, May 20, 2009 at 8:13 AM, Ann House <ann@annhouse.org> wrote:

Warning! I make no bones about deriding alchemy, astrology and other pseudo sciences, so if you're into that stuff, some of the following might offend you. Yes, Ann and Troy - we can see the galactic center from here in the constellation Sagittarius, or rather we can look towards it. The center proper is obscured from Earth by intervening dust, but there have been great images made of the vicinity in infrared. I have to share a bit of "history" that I saw on the History channel last night. The program was about Nostradamus and the so-called doomsday prophecies regarding December 12, 2012. The program claimed that on 12.21.12 the sun would become perfectly aligned with the galactic center as seen from Earth, and somehow this was predicted by Nostradamus and the Mayan calendar, among other sources. The program further claimed that this phenomenon was due to the precession of the equinoxes. They also explored possible scenarios that would wipe out the world on that date, including volcanoes and "galactic waves" that could destroy all life. I suppose that if the sun does suddenly move into Sagittarius it really could be the end of the world as we know it. Anyone know where the Nostradamus and astrology nuts get this b___s__t? Kim
Oops - that date should have been December 21, 2012, not December 12. So you'll have nine more days to live than you thought you did. Kim

Here is an interesting page that seems to explain exactly what is meant by the solstice sun becoming "perfectly aligned" with the galactic plane. http://alignment2012.com/whatisga.htm Apparently the "perfect" alignment actually happened in 1998. This occurred when the sun, at the moment of the winter solstice, was aligned almost exactly on the galactic plane near Sagittarius from our point of view. The claim is that the Mayans calculated the precession of the earth's axis by measuring the precession of the equinoxes, and that they created a calendar with a long cycle to correspond to this precession. They calculated that the solstice sun would lie on the galactic plane in 2012. I have no idea if this claim about the Mayans is true. If it is true, the Mayans may have been a few years off (14 years or so), but I'm still pretty impressed. Of course, none of this has anything to do with volcanoes, asteroids, or mysterious galactic waves. All the hysteria is pure bunk. -- Michael W Thelen To have doubted one's own first principles is the mark of a civilized man. -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
You're all wrong, Nostradamus is wrong, the Mayans were wrong. The universe will end at the moment I die. I've made my peace with it- it's actually fascinating that I, personally, am the reason for the existence of the universe in the first place, and the billions of years of cosmic evolution leading up to me. Wouldn't it be funny if I actually died on 12/21/12? LOL! [?]
Your clock is officially ticking...

Ha, I didn't wish for anything, Rodger, lol. But as long as you mention it, in order to stave off the end of the universe, I'll wish for a useful lifespan measured in hundreds of years, lol. That MIGHT give me enough time to get all of my work done. ;o) On Wed, May 20, 2009 at 8:46 PM, Rodger C. Fry <rcfry@comcast.net> wrote:

The galactic center is a closer to the horizon here than in Texas, so it is close to the same but not exactly. They are serious about no white light after dark at the TSP. You can get a feel for their statement that the Milky Way rising in Texas has been mistaken for approaching storm clouds. Erik That is beautiful. Can we see that view here?
