I just have this thing about spiral galaxies. NGC 1961, 5 three minute exposures stacked. C-14 @f/5, ST-10XME, -10°. Auto guided. Shot early Monday morning. http://utahastro.info/temp/NGC1961.JPG I'll leave it posted for a few days before tossing it. pw
Interesting, Patrick. Yet another advantage of a home observatory -- no freezing one's whatever while taking photos. thanks, Joe
For those interested in participating here is a link to information on the Bryce Canyon Astronomy Festival. http://www.slas.us/displayevent.asp?EventID=996 As noted please send the participation forms to Angie and email me the following information: 1. Numbers of nights participating. 2. Telescope(s) participant is bringing. 3. License number of vehicle. 4. If you want free camping. No hookups are available. Clear Skies Don Colton
NGC 1961 was at one time considered to be the largest known spiral galaxy. See http://www.astr.ua.edu/gifimages/ngc1961.html The link mentions it being large but I am not sure if it still holds the honor of the largest. Anyone know? Here's a terrific photo that shows the incredible star-forming regions in the disk: http://www.caelumobservatory.com/obs/n1961.html Some sources call it the largest spiral galaxy, one or two called it the largest galaxy, period. But that must be in error, some giant ellipticals would surely dwarf NGC 1961. --- "Don J. Colton" <djcolton@piol.com> wrote:
