Hi all, I just got a call from Joy Shaw who works for KBYU FM that is doing a story for the Assoc. Press on tonight's meteor shower. She is planning on coming up to the Gravel Pit after midnight tonight and collecting some sound bytes for a radio program. If you want to be part of a nationwide broadcast and have your "ooh's" and "aahs" recorded for the rest of the nation to envy, or be interviewed, the Gravel Pit's the place to be. Deseret News' Joe Bauman will also likely be there for quotes in the paper. I suppose I'm committed now to be late for work tomorrow! ;o) See you up there, Rich PS Directions can be found on the uvaa.org website under "star parties". __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Hi Rich, How did she hear about the quarry? Can you make sure that she does not say where she is reporting from? Since we do not have permission to be there from the new management of the quarry, we probably don't want to publicize our presence there. They did say they did not want people there after dark, so I hate to have it announced on the radio, and then have them forbid us to use the place. Jo At 11:05 AM 8/11/2004 -0700, you wrote:

Jo, I realize I just replied to the wrong list. She got my name presumably from the UVAA website. I gave her directions to the pit; I'll make sure she just mentions "Brown's Canyon" or something like that when she's reporting, so no worries. Will you be there? Rich, We will probably head up to the quarry around midnight tonight, with a couple of our kids and their friends. Jo At 02:57 PM 8/11/2004 -0700, you wrote:

Report from Little Mountain: I ended up at Little Mountain, where things were pretty zoo-ey for a long time. Awful light pollution, had to fight through cars to find a place to set up, people continually coming and going and having a party. Also, I didn't see a huge number of meteors. I'll be writing a story, but I don't yet know if I managed to capture any of those streaks on film -- they had to be pretty bright where I was to even show up, I think. Best wishes, Joe
Joe, I observed from the trampoline in my back yard for an hour starting at 10:45 pm. I estimate the ZHR to be about 15. Of course, I live in Bountiful, and was observing pretty early. Work comes early too. I did see M31 naked eye, though. It was not terribly obvious. Happy to hear that one of your photos turned out. Brent --- Joe Bauman <bau@desnews.com> wrote:

OK, I have to confess another of my many areas of ignorance: what's ZHR? -- Best wishes, and thanks for the report -- Joe
It stands for Zenithal Hourly Rate. It is basically how many meteors you can expect to see visually in an hour, with the radiant at the zenith. --- Joe Bauman <bau@desnews.com> wrote:

ZHR = Zenithal Hourly Rate, a theoretical rate for an experienced observer under clear, dark skies. The Observer's Handbook has a better definition. No, I didn't score any Perseids, at least not with the digital camera. Won't know about film until next week (still have some shooting to do on this roll). I'd like to send you a short report later today. I was not aware that we do not have permission to observe from the gravel pit. Jo, do you know who the new management is? Has anyone contacted them to get permission? Kim, When we realized there was new management, "someone" tried to get in touch with the manager. A secretary would not allow them to get past her, and said that she was certain that no one was allowed on the site, but that they could write a letter to the company requesting permission. However, she said it would have to be run past the corporate board, and she was sure the answer would be no. At that point, the person felt it was better to ask forgiveness if caught, rather than bring the companies attention to the issue. This was mentioned at the time, but no one in the club seemed inclined to pursue the matter. Jo At 04:28 PM 8/11/2004 -0600, you wrote:
