SLAS Double Rainbow picture

Nice rainbow pic, Patrick. One of the interesting parts of these double rainbows is that the order of the colors in the dimmer outer rainbow is reversed. On the brighter rainbow to the right, the green is on the right. On the dimmer rainbow to the left near the dome, the green is on the left. - Canopus56 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! That it was a quadruple rainbow is a bit easier to see in http://utahastro.info/temp/RAINBOW01.JPG . Many of us watching commented that while we'd seen many double rainbows in the past, this was the first time two of the bows converged near the ground. I've no idea why the convergence but I'm guessing one of the bows was being formed by a moisture mass that was closer than that forming the ones behind. Patrick

Good luck. The end of the main rainbow in http://utahastro.info/temp/RAINBOW02.JPG appears to be the ball diamond restrooms... :)
This is why, in spite of books saying that the water droplets act like prisms, I think they act like a diffraction grating. You have the first and second order spectra visible. Each subsequent spectrum is reversed from the previous one. Prisms only show the first order spectrum. It takes gratings to show higher orders. Canopus56 wrote:
